5.0 out of 5 stars Cats love'em!
I'm so glad Amazon is selling the kitty treats now (in addition to the doggie version). I have 2 large orange tabby cats, which the vet said are genetically predisposed to hip problems. He said they could have a glucosamine supplement to help with this. I have fed a few treats daily (which they LOVE!) to both cats since they were 6 months old, and have had no hip...

OK, I was on board with these last year, and told everyone I know about these. I called them "kitty crack". I'm so glad Amazon is selling the kitty treats now (in addition to the doggie version). I have 2 large orange tabby cats, which the vet said are genetically predisposed to hip problems. He said they could have a glucosamine supplement to help with this. I have fed a few treats daily (which they LOVE!) to both cats since they were 6 months old, and have had no hip problems so far. Cats go crazy for these treats and there are a few varieties, so they don't get bored. I also give the flaxseed and vitamin version of the treats, 1 bag to every 2 bags of the happy hips version. One bag lasts a couple of weeks, fed daily per instructions. This price is excellent, especially with the subcribe and save. Our local health food store sells these treats for $4.00 a bag. This is a great way to give a cat vitamin supplements. They willingly (and eagerly) eat them.

OK, I was on board with these last year, and told everyone I know about these. I called them "kitty crack". Well, they have since changed their formula and made them less moist and the cats hate them!!!! Not only that, these hard little chicken strips make the cats throw up!! I have 6 cats, and now, they all dont like this treat that they once went NUTS for. I complained to the company, and they said that after many consumer complaints, they added some moisture back to the formula, but it's not nearly what it was, and I couldnt be more disappointed. They used to be soft and flexible and appetizing, now they are hard dry strips that make the cats throw up. ALSO, after a couple days after I open the package, all the chicken is MOLDY!!!! What the??????????????????

1.0 out of 5 stars Mold 'Known Issue', September 15, 2010
This review is from: Catswell Happy Hips for Cats, Chicken Breast, Glucosamine & Chondroitin, 2-Ounce Pouches (Pack of 10) (Grocery)
For the 2nd time in month, I was the unlucky recipient of a bag of moldy treats made by Catswell. The first bag was 'Breathies' and was moldy and hard upon opening. We took it back to the store for a refund. The cats didn't eat any.
The second bag was 'Happy Hips' that I bought yesterday. The product seemed soft and looked fine both through the window of the bag and upon opening it.

Gave treats to 3 of my cats, and as I was closing the bag, I saw green and white mold. Dug a little further in, and there was alot of it. I called Catswell, and they informed me, to my shock, that this was a "known issue" and they are so sorry. They claim that this happens in the summer months due to hot weather, etc. However, I have found reviews online that show the same thing happening in January.

When I asked why they are not recalling the product, or telling the pet stores about the issue, they sounded like a broken record. All they could say was "sorry" or "we'll send you a free bag". No thanks. When a company knows they are selling moldy food, and does nothing to inform the consumer, or correct the issue, I'd rather take my business to a company that is concerned for the well being of my pets. Our 15 year old cat was having trouble going up the stairs or onto the couch. She seemed to be favoring her left shoulder but was also unable to jump to her favorite places. We tried giving her glocosamine and chondroitin from capsules that were to be sprinkled over her food but she wouldn't eat the food. When I found Happy Hips I ordered three packets to try out. She loves it, and after a couple of weeks it was obvious that she was going up stairs much easier and was able to jump where she had been having trouble before.

Out of the three packages one was filled with mold. I have ordered this 10 pack and hope that is not still a problem, but the results of her eating this product makes the chance worth while.

Happy Hips are a wonderful addition to my cats' ( I have 5 ) diet. However, when I purchased the 10 pack of Happy Hips, to my disgust, seven of them were moldy right out of the chute. I opened one, found a wad of mold in the center, washed my hands and repeated the process four times before I found one package mold-free. I found two more moldy packages before I found the other two "clean" packs. When I contacted the company, they sent another type of product as replacement and a shipping label to return the moldy Happy Hips.(Which I threw away as I opened each one) Don't get me wrong; Happy Hips are loved by all my cats, but the texture has become closer to jerky than they were when I started using them. For me; this is not a problem because I chop them up to prevent hurting my cats' mouth. I love the whole concept of "all natural with no preservatives", but there has to be a natural preservative to prevent this mold issue.

5.0 out of 5 stars A cat's best friend, November 30, 2009

I regularly get this product for my best friend's cat. Nubby is a 25+ lb Maine Coon mix who has some issues with his hips. When he was a kitten, he'd been mangled by a car. The vet told my friends the cat wouldn't jump, climb, run, etc. Too bad no one told Nub. At any rate, he was slowly starting to show his age with slight difficulties in jumping when I started giving them bags of Happy Hips for him. The cat loves the taste of them, first of all, so "dosing" him with the glucosamine & chondroitin is a piece of cake. Second of all, and most importantly in my book, he's moving easier. Overall, this product is a winner in my book.

i have used catswell products for several years, as well as the original dogswell products. this company is on the decline-- as an original user of their dogswell products (catswell introduced much later) i know what the product should look like. it has been disturbing to me that my last two catswell orders have been seriously overcooked and/orburned. the chicken strips are supposed to be reddish in color, not dark brown or black. many are also improperly cut.

considering they are made in china, i have become very wary. this product is sold in pet stores all around the country. they seem to have forgotten about quality control. i dont suggest giving the burned pieces to your pets (the ingredients of catswell and dogswell products are exactly the same, it is just the way they are cut that differs) how can a mass market item be so inconsistent? imagine ordering a box of saltines, only to find most of them overcooked or burned. not good...

4.0 out of 5 stars Unpredictable product but when fresh they are good, June 21, 2011

This product has been a bit unpredictable over the past year. They were dark and hard, soft and light colored and somewhere in between too. My cat loves them when they are soft and light colored and I've noticed it helps his joints. He is more active and jumps better when he eats these on a regular basis then when he doesn't eat them. I just wish the consistency of the product was more predictable.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cats - 50%; Bichon - 100%, June 11, 2011

This review is from: Catswell Happy Hips for Cats, Chicken Breast, Glucosamine & Chondroitin, 2-Ounce Pouches (Pack of 10) (Grocery)
I have two cats - one who seems to have some joint issues (sometimes limps). The one with joint issues loves these "treats", and they seem to minimize the limping. My second cat will generally walk away from these treats.
I also have a Bichon who is starting to have joint problems (she is about to have surgery on one knee). I *suspect* that the glucosamine / chondroitin (recommended for Bichons with knee problems) has helped her get around well a little longer.
My only concern with the Bichon is that the use of these treats may have "masked" her knee problem. She had seemed to limp a little, then it largely went away with regular / daily feeding of these treats. Hopefully, her knee didn't get progressively worse during that time. I can't relate cause and effect with any certainty, but her knee got lots worse after going a couple months without these treats (prompting the knee surgery). I have now resumed the treats, and even set up regular deliveries (what a deal - discounted + free shipping).

I used to buy these chicken strips for my ferrets (Wilson and Amber) because it was the only thing my boy would eat. When I bought the 10-pack from Amazon, the jerky was much dryer than I was used to and my boy wouldn't eat it anymore. It seems the company has changed the recipe and for a product labeled "Happy Hips" you'd think a little more lube would be in order.
