Charlie Adams may never have had a hit of any measure, but as a songwriter and effective singer, he left behind a small treasure-trove of quality Texas dancehall Western swing, country, and proto-rockabilly recordings on this excellent 30-track collection. Although Adams never considered himself a singer, he vocalizes effectively on tracks like "Black Land Blues," "Baby Let Me Kindle Your Flame," "You've Wounded the Heart," "I'm Drinking and Thinking Over You," and "Gloomy Sunday." Top-notch backing on all these sides (especially the later Columbia sessions that feature Adams' regular working band) is a big plus and Adams' story is told effectively by Kevin Coffey's excellent notes. Charlie Adams is one of those great artists who some how slipped through the cracks and never quite made it to the fame that he deserved! But thanks to Bear Family, Charlie Adams is back in circulation with tunes like the title track "Cattin' Around", which really bounces. Other uptempo western swing numbers like "T.T. Boogie", "Baby Let Me Kindle Your Flame" and "I'm an Army Man" are balanced with down right honky tonk tunes that hit the mark that modern day country music can't even get close to. Songs like "I'm A Railroad Daddy" and "I'm Gonna Put My Foot Down" are the kind of songs that parallel Hank Williams Sr. in style. Mournful ballads and weepers round out the album's content with songs like "My Blue Monday" and "I'll Remember Your Love In My Prayers". Two of the songs on this album could probably have been left off but they do speak of the era. I'm sure that had Charlie Adams known what we know now, he probably would never have recorded "Hey Liberace". This novelty tune is even funnier knowing Librace's sexual preferences, the lyrics are forgivable knowing the era that they were written and the song itself is a great arrangement. Pistol Packin' Mama is done very well too, but it's just a song that's been done to death - again a reflection of the times. Over all - if your looking for how country music should really sound, this is the disc for you! This is a disc that you'll have a hard time taking out of your player!
