One Of Eddy Arnold's Very Very Best,
By Michael G. Batcho (McAdoo, PA (USA)) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Cattle Call (Audio CD)
"CATTLE CALL" . . . i remember so clearly the day back in 1963 when i received this LP in the mail from RCA's Record Club . . . i always loved "cowboy songs of the west" (probably every kid growing up in the 50's in America watched every cowboy on television and heard the songs of the west) . . . so when i plopped the vinyl LP onto the stereo turntable and heard that golden voice of Eddy Arnold deliver these ballads it was like visiting "familiar territory".
Eddy recorded and re-recorded the title song "CATTLE CALL" many times, but the rendition of it he put down on THIS album is perfect and crystal-clear . . .when he hits that Eddy Arnold yodel "hoo-hoo-hoo-hoohooo" you just have to try to sing along with him (even if you can't reach the notes that Eddy did) . . . this song and this recording has held up remarkably as a classic and never ever loses its magic or appeal no matter how often you play it or hear it. The tracks are all great: "The Streets Of Loredo" . . . "Cool Water" . . . "The Wayward Wind" . . . "Carry Me back To The Lone Prarie" (Oh Bury Me Not On The Lone Prarie) . . . "Tumbling Tumbleweeds" . . . But two of my favorites are: "Where The Mountains Meet The Sky" which talks about a cowboy heading off into that sunset of eternity. And; "Jim, I Wore A Tie Today"(the first one that i ever wore) . . . a song about burying an old friend and travelling companion. I guess the old west had countless "sad stories" to tell, and nothing told them better than a song . . . and few ever sag the songs better than did EDDY ARNOLD . . . and this album is among Eddy's very very best! I was thrilled to first get it and hear it on LP back in 1963 when i was just fifteen . . . and it is such a blessing to be able to listen to it now in pristince crystal clear CD format and quality. "Old Cowboys never die . . . they don't fade away . . . they live on compact disc!" :) Thanks EDDY ARNOLD for sharing so much of your talent with us through your performances and recordings over the decades, and thanks for THIS album, "CATTLE CALL"! It is one i will alway enjoy and appreciate and cherish.

A classic record that requires no nostalgia to be wowed by!,

I would like to echo the 5-star raves of critics who have commented before me, but from the standpoint of a 40-year old yankee record-junkie who has continued to return to this record from a giant and extensively diverse collection (2,000+ records) through the dozen years that I have owned it. It is THAT charming! Once you understand the mood which is satisfied by the soothing calm which Eddy's basso intoning these great western tales (never mind those incredible yodels!), nothing else will do. A uniquely appealing record that I would insist must be included in any collection that would call dare to make a claim to being comprehensive. It is a short list of $14 items which can bring you this much pleasure.

I bought this cd for my 88-year-old mom. She loves the selection of classic cowboy songs. The sound quality and clarity are great.

This is one of the country music classics that me, my husband and my parents remember as one of our favorites. Eddy Arnold has a wonderful voice and these are some of the greatest country songs. We've been looking for this album on CD for awhile (we have the LP Record).

If you want some enjoyable tradtional American western music, buy this album. Eddy Arnold's velvet voice makes for some easy listening. I bought this album because a close relative was from the west and he used to sing many of these songs and he loved Eddy Arnold. So I bought it for sentimental reasons but I'm not sorry I did. It's still a nice cd. My favorite is this version of The Streets of Laredo. I know these old western songs are not very popular any more but it's nice to have some historical American music.
