5.0 out of 5 stars Best renditions of American Western standards you'll find!, April 1, 2003
By
This review is from: Cattle Call / Thereby Hangs A Tale (Audio CD)
A singer posessing both genuine, personable warmth and solid technical vocal abilities; recorded in his vocal prime performing American western standards both authentic and contemporary with obvious enthusiasm; set to musically effective, rich instrumental backing largely based on acoustic guitar; recorded live in the studio in glorious true stereo by RCA Living Stereo era recording talent (Bill Porter, Roy Orbison's engineer on many of that singers' astounding sounding hits); transferred intelligently to CD without being ruined with "improvements" by the good quality Bear Family engineers.

Both of Eddy's classic Western albums. Classic Western folk Americana. Fine vocals. Fine backing. Better sound acoustically than most modern pop records. This all adds up to one wonderful CD! A keeper, and it only grows on you as time goes by. If you are at all curious or interested in folk music, get it. Good listening, folks.

I bought this originally as a record...way back when. A few years ago, I found the CD and it brought back all those wonderful memories of listening to this ever-gentle "Tennessee plowboy"! I heartily recommend this to ANY Eddy Arnold fan!

5.0 out of 5 stars Childhood memories restored..., February 9, 2002
My father died in 1963, but for the final two years of his life his favorite record was Eddie Arnold singing "Tennessee Stud" and "Red-Headed Stranger." I remember liking the way Eddie did "Battle of Little Big Horn" and "Davey Crockett". I saw Eddie in concert a couple of years after my dad's passing, and he stuck to his love songs, pop music crossover hits, and the like. For my money, the songs on this CD are his better contributions to American music. Although Willie Nelson made "Red-Headed Stranger" his own hit about 15 years after Eddie released it, Arnold's version has a charm of its own that holds up well. If you like cowboy ballads, try this album. Eddie's not trying to sound raw or "authentic" on these songs, but his smooth vocalizing treats the material with respect. If you like Eddie's love and pop songs, give him a chance to show you that cowboy ballads and western story-songs are worth listening to. In his long, long career, this compliation, based on two records released more than 40 years ago, stands out as a major winner.

5.0 out of 5 stars None better, January 30, 2000

I've often wished Eddy Arnold would have concentrated more on the western/folk/story telling songs he performs on these two albums. All one needs to make listening to this CD perfect is a big fire, a warm night and a sky full of stars. His relaxed delivery is second to none and his pure voice gives new meaning to these old standards. Now if only someone would include his folk offerings of Wandering with Eddy Arnold and the The Folk Song Book on CD. Bear Family are you listening?

5.0 out of 5 stars Country Nostalgia At It's Best, December 7, 1999
By
J E Goodwin (Cedar City, Utah) - See all my reviews
I loved this album as a little boy. My brother served a tour of duty during the Vietnam conflict and I remember my Dad lying on the couch listening to this very album (which was also a favorite of my brother's) with a longing and reverent look on his face while my brother was serving his tour. I even think we held the phone to the old record player and played "Cattle Call" once or twice with his precious phone calls. These old tunes are classic and you can't help but tap your toes and sing along with "Eddy" while you're listening. These memorable songs take you back to a less complicated, more innocent era. Getting this CD was like riding a bike again after being off one for years. It only took a few minutes for it to feel "easy" again. My Father passed away a couple of months ago and many wonderful memories flooded over me as I once again heard Eddy's mellow and clear voice singing "Cattle Call", "Tumbling Tumbleweeds", "Streets of Laredo", and many, many more familiar songs. I loved this album and was so happy to now have this wonderful music on CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great folk/westernsongs by Eddy Arnold., January 4, 2009
By
This review is from: Cattle Call / Thereby Hangs A Tale (Audio CD)
When i heard Eddy do these songs for the first time it was on old german extended play singles. What a great singer he was.
I found out these was recorded in stereo in late 50s.
Lucky for me and other peoples,Bear family Records started releasing this kind of music on cd in mid 80s.I sent a letter to Richard Weize, chief of Bear family records.
About 4 years later these recordings was released on cd in great supersound. The sound is so great because it is from the original sessiontapes, whitout any modern soundreduction systems. It got that warm fat sound from the early stereoage.Buy it now, listen and enjoy Eddy at his best.
