Review

"Readers will enjoy the author's zeal and love for orchids revealed by his breadth of knowledge and candid, unpretentious, and flowing style of writing."—Diane B. Rhodes, E-Streams, October 1999 (Diane B. Rhodes E-Streams )

"Richly documented and illustrated, with many reproductions and line drawings of historical valor, it covers the fifty Cattleya species."—Tropical Biology Review, 1998 (Tropical Biology Review )

Book Description

First announced ten years ago as "A Book in Six Parts," this monumental series is now almost complete. Although Cattleya is the best-known genus, other rewards & mysteries are to be found here-why, for example, Laelia should occur in Mexico & Central America & in Brazil, but not in Colombia & Venezuela linking the two regions. The latest book in this important series on cattleyas & their relatives is the largest volume yet, documenting 70 species in 15 genera, including Brassavola, very popular among growers, & continuing the discussion of Encyclia begun with the Caribbean species in Volume IV.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not for everyone, but a comprehensive study..., September 17, 2002

This review is from: The Cattleyas and Their Relatives: A Book in Six Parts, Brassavola, Encyclia, and Other Genera of Mexico and Central America (Vol 5) (Hardcover)
If you are looking for a coffee table book with lots of glossy pictures, this book is not for you. However, if you are looking for a comprehensive study on the history, breeding, and ecology of this tribe, this is the book for you. As for myself, I thoroughly enjoyed my first trip through it and I love having it on the shelf as a reference.
