5.0 out of 5 stars Very, very funny situations, March 19, 2011

This is one of the funniest young people's books I've read. Though written for children, it is complex enough for an adult and it made me laugh when I first came across it--maybe in my thirties. It has made me laugh through a few repeat readings since. Much of the humor lies in the protagonist's misunderstanding of modern devices, the exasperation he causes others and his own frustration, and the various incidents are well-handled. It is all logical, in its way, without the flippancy that I dislike in some writers' humor.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not Free SF Reader, October 25, 2007
The '70s are scary.

Especially if you are an 11th century bloke transported in time to this particular period.

Apart from dodgy trousers you have to deal with all the technological stuff that you just think is magic, and only get a kid to help hide you from everyone.

Then there is that little problem of magically finding your way back in time.
