Book Description

1999
The Caucasus region, which forms a natural boundary between Asia and Europe, has always been of great strategic importance. Russia's expansion into the region in the late eighteenth century brought conflict with the Ottoman Empire, creating a new area of contention between these two states, and the borderlands remained in a state of intermittent conflict until the end of the First World War. This volume, first published in 1953, discusses the four major conflicts which took place in the region during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Focusing on military strategy, the book describes in great detail battles, skirmishes and logistical problems of warfare in a mountainous and remote region. Illustrated with thirty-nine maps, it provides a wealth of information for military historians and remains an authoritative account.

3.0 out of 5 stars Detailed but not very readable military classic, January 14, 2009

This review is from: Caucasian Battlefields: A History Of The Wars On The Turco-Caucasian Border 1828-1921 (European War Series) (Hardcover)
If you are seriously intrested in strategy and battle tactics, this is a unique book about a very hard campaign ground. The writer uses without difficulties Turkish and Russian sources and gives a very detailed account of difficult campaigns on the Caucasus. It is not an easy book to read, but invaluable if you are really interested in the history of conflicts in that part of the world.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very good book about some obscure conflicts, February 24, 2009

This is a very good book, well researched and fairly well written about some conflicts that most in the US and UK are not familiar with. The book covers the various Turkish-Russian wars in the Caucasus Mountains of eastern Turkey. It is a military history, with plenty of detailed accounts of campaigns and battles. It also discusses the resistance efforts by some of the people of that area to Russia's rule, especially in Chechnya and Dagistan. The book covers the conflicts mostly from the Russian side, though it does use Turkish sources and discusses what was going on on the Ottoman side of the war(s). About half of the book is devoted to World War I. As a native English speaker, I found it fairly well written.

The book has excellent maps, which certainly help those who are not familiar with the terrain in that part of the world.

I recommend this to major libraries, and those interested in Russia, the Ottoman Empire, or World War I.
