Book Description

October 1992
Caught in the Middle provides a wealth of practical guidance and 12 key strategies to help middle managers take charge of their careers, maximize their contributions to their organizations, and gain satisfaction from their work. In recent years, the role of middle managers in our organizations has been dramatically and permanently altered. You'll learn why the middle management success formulas of the past won't work in today's "leaner and meaner" organizational structures. You'll also learn how to develop the concrete skills needed to meet the changing demands, expectations and pressures that middle managers now face. Here's just a sample of what this comprehensive guide contains: Key strategies you can use to market yourself as "Me, Inc!" to enhance your visibility and credibility among those who can influence your success; proven tactics to help you create a long-term vision for the company area you control, increase productivity and morale, and achieve impressive results; 8 important ways to make office politics work for you - not against you; 11 simple techniques that will help you expand your own power base and make yourself indispensable to the company; time-proven ideas for forging strategic alliances with upper management and becoming a master teacher and role model for your staff and much more! Also included are actual case histories of middle managers who have experienced both the struggles and opportunities of playing in the middle...a look at why senior executives become frustrated with middle managers (and vice versa)... PLUS guidelines and quizzes that help you decide whether you have what it takes to "go it alone."

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

With many middle managers caught up in organizational changes, this book presents a wealth of information to help them better understand and carry out their changing roles and responsibilities in today's workplace. McDermott, a recognized management consultant, effectively examines behaviors that were appropriate in the past, discusses why they are no longer right, and offers many valuable suggestions for implementing new behavior patterns and thought processes. Her sources are excellent, and her recommendations are practical and solid. She includes a good list of suggested readings. This book should be read by all middle managers and management students. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Some answers to the future of work., December 19, 2000
Although this book is nearly a decade old, written about the American experience and for an American audience, the ideas and concepts are applicable to anywhere is the world where middle management is being squeezed out due the changes taking place in the workplace. As we move from an industrial society to an informational society and from a workforce that needs to be managed and controlled to a workforce that is managing and applying knowledge, the need for traditional middle managers is rapidly dissappearing. What is needed are creative and innovative leaders and free-agents who can spearhead and lead fellow colleagues to add value to create a profit for stakeholders. This needs a completely new vision, mindset and approach to work. This book provides some interesting ideas and concepts if you think deep as you read the chapters.
