I love this book. My only regret is that I didn't read it before reading The Champdoce Mystery, which was still fantastic even though read out of order - go ahead and grab that one now; it's also available for free.

Emile Gaboriau was very popular before being eclipsed by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and he deserves to be rediscovered. If you like his work, I also recommend the work of E. Phillips Oppenheim, also in the public domain and available for free.

This book is really only part 1- you need to read this book and then go out and read The Champdoce Mystery to get the conclusion of the story. I like the author's books even though at times it takes a lot of concentration. He starts the story uses kind of a ledger/journal that takes you back into the past to bring you back to date. Since there are 2 books to make the stories fit. I lost the story every once in awhile. But,the author builds interesting characters. From those who are are criminals to those who are the "heros" of the story. I enjoyed the 2 books and would recommend this book. I will finish the review under The Champoce Mystery.

This is part 1 of a well written character drama. The author did a great job of creating interesting characters, and throwing them together in their opposing schemes. Give the story time, and you will see it coming together. If you like the 19th Century sensation style, you will like this one. Give the free kindle version a shot.

Was not expecting the book to cut off midway through the story, and the sequel/continuation is NOT on amazon. bummer.
