The four remaining survivors of a community devastated by plague must learn to evolve new ways of relating to one another in this novel, which affirms the possibility of human survival in the aftermath of disaster.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

A handful of people struggle to endure in a seacoast town after an unexplained plague has killed most of the planet's populace. The author is not offering an ecological warning or a science fiction scenario; he suggests that, like the forest fire that opens the book, destruction will pave the way for new life. In any case, the end of civilization serves to clear the stage for a rousing drama uninterrupted by phone calls or traffic jams. Some survivors are hit hard by the scourge, but Julian luxuriates in the resulting solitude and unhurried hours he can enjoy in this verdant, marshy setting. After his lover, Richard, abandons him to see what is left of the rest of the world, Julian develops a new relationship with Jaydie, a strong-willed pragmatic woman. Their time is spent talking, gathering food and making love. But the disaster has left them emotionally scarred: as they tentatively explore their friendship and coax it toward love, they also must define the new society they inhabit. Replete with fine detail and a strong sense of place, this poetic first novel delves into the raw, exposed feelings of thoughtful characters.

About the Author

Jonathan Lerner is no stranger to life on the edge, or to making himself at home wherever he lands.

He has been a radical organizer, a political fugitive, a gay hustler, and a gypsy antiques dealer; he has hardly stopped traveling since he circled the globe at age 11. "Cutting it close is in my blood," he says.

He now makes his living as a writer. His articles on travel, design and cultural commentary appear in In Style, Salon.com, and other publications. He enjoys the variety, and the odd moment of glamour - though at 53 he is aware that the free-lance life comes with no benefits or dependable income.

"But at least these days I'm not doing anything likely to get myself arrested or killed."

He is co-author of the oral history Voices from Wounded Knee, and is at work on another novel, Alex Underground, set in 1970's Havana. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!, May 31, 2001

This review is from: Caught In A Still Place (Paperback)
The end has come to this nice little tourist town in Florida. The chemicals have killed many and many of the people that didn't die fled to other parts of the state thinking that it was safer.

Only a handful of people that decided not to leave are taking care of each other. They find that their friendships are stronger then they would have ever thought. Maybe they can start to world over again.

**** Caught in a Still Place takes you to a time that we all hope we never have to endure. It shows you of true friendship and of love and makes you wonder if ever you could survive like these people do. It also shows that when there is friendship, even the worst situations seem bearable. Excellent book! ****
