This review is from: Caught by Surprise (Paperback)
The story of Deputy Sheriff Millie Surprise and Australian country-western singer Brig McKay is a series romance novel of the late 80s. Millie is a woman in a man's job, who left a career in the Navy due to sexual harassment. Brig is thrown into her jail after punching a senator over a woman. The difficulty of this novel is that Brig wants to protect her but the author has to show Millie's ability to protect herself and Brig. An uneasy mix, especially 20 years ago, and unfortunately the characters feel like caricatures. This is the 2nd novel in Deborah Smith's Surprise romance series, first published in Loveswept by Bantam (1988-1991). Millie Surprise first appears in "Hold on Tight" the story of Rucker McClure and Dinah Sheridan. The big surprise in "Caught by Surprise" is the epilogue: the cliff-hanger disappearance of Dinah McClure that is truly intriguing. This cliff-hanger is resolved in "Never Let Go" the story of why Dinah disappeared and how she and Rucker deal with the mistrust and disception that follows. Millie's brothers (Jeopard and Kyle Surprise) have significant parts in "Never Let Go" and their stories are told in "Sundance and the Princess" (Follow the Sun) and "Sara's Surprise". Worth the $2.99 Kindle price but not much more except as a bridge for Rucker and Dinah's stories.
