A hustle by any other name is still a hustle,
By
This review is from: Caught 'em Slippin' (Paperback)
In his fourth book, Al-Saadiq keeps it consistent and thorough. 'Caught Em Slippin' takes you to the heart of the streets where there is no honor among thieves, no loyalty among friends, and where it's every man for himself and God for us all.
For Sha Rock, hustling is not a game, but a way of life. He's determined to make that money at all cost. With his muy caliente chica Miranda, a RUTHLESS and trained killer Cal, and his boy Jimmy, they are stacking them chips. But as they get deeper and deeper, the lines of loyalty, greed, and reality become blurred. Who will be caught slippin? You take elements like the street, drama, suspense, murder, sex (can't forget the sex!), a well thought out plot and author with a gift for storytelling - you mix them together and VIOLA - you've got 'Caught Em Slippin.' Saadiq, what's good? The Viagras worked though I don't feel they were necessary in the first place. This book further proves you were most deserving of your recent "coveted" lit award. :) I was really feeling the cameo. Tu hablas espanol? SHOUT OUT, BIG UP, and WHOOP D WOO to my girl CRYSTAL on the synopsis! KIRR. This you-this me? **And Borders got caught slippin by not carrying this book**

Dangerously in love.........................................,

Is there truly ever a limit to one's loyalty with love in the equation?
This is a wickedly intense ride! As always Al-Saadiq has truly outdone himself! He has you so caught up in the allure of the hustle, and so very desperate to see who will prevail in the end. I mean you're reading and figuring that you know what's about to happen and ((TRUMP)) Al-Saadiq hits you hard! Your knees begin to wobble! I know that when it comes to Al-Saadiq I tend to be repetitive! I mean what else can I say? Truly people there are very few REAL contenders in this genre, and as far as I am concerned Al-Saadiq is sitting on top of that throne! If there are; by some strange coincidence any readers of today's Urban Literature genre who haven't had a chance to partake in what a reality street life is. I highly recommend that you visit True2Life productions.com and partake in the thrill of knowing that street credibility is everything! Al-Saadiq is a REAL in-da-street-dude!

WOW! What can I say about this book? Al-Saadiq, you did yo thing with this one.
This book takes you on a journey of street love. I mean, I really felt like I was there with those characters. That's how real they were. Mr. Banks puts it down! You are one of those writers who keep it real. This love story had me on edge from the first page. I could not wait to see who would be Miranda's next victim. She was grimey and in love all at the same time. I have a higher level of respect for the streets after this one!! Keep doing it! Congrats!

You'll never catch Mr. Banks Slippin'!!!!!!,

This review is from: Caught 'em Slippin' (Paperback)
In the acknowledgements for Mr. Banks fourth novel (Caught 'Em Slippin') he states that a few people thought he went soft with the release of Sincerely Yours? I'm happy to say that I wasn't one of those few. Sincerely Yours was written for his female fan base but as one of Mr. Banks' most vocal female fans I have to say that Caught 'Em Slippin' appeals much more to my feminine side. My feminine side demands grittiness from my favorite urban author and Mr. Banks delivers that and much much more.
In Caught "Em Slippin' Mr. Banks introduces readers to Miranda Benderas who is one of the most ride or die chicks found in between the pages of a book. Miranda's love for Sha-Rock leads her into a world filled with both glamour and murder. After an incarceration Sha-Rock has big plans for a come up and Miranda is the star player on his team. Another unforgettable character on his team is Killer Cal, whose name speaks for itself. But even with an unstoppable team how long can the run last? Long enough to have readers up all night while the book unravels into it's mind-blowing conclusion. Mr. Banks has even managed to out-do himself with this novel which I thought was impossible. But nothing is impossible when it's coming from the mind of urban fiction's most talented author. Excellent work Mr. Banks, From a Fan 4 Life.

Quite Interesting!,

I enjoyed this book as I always enjoy books about the streets because I am not a person from the "street" or should I say "streetwise". This book was very interesting all the way through. The storyline was great and it kept you wanting to keep reading it to find out what was going to happen next. I won't go into details regarding the book because for those who are reading this review don't need to know anymore than the brief description given on Amazon or the back of the book. Very good book and interesting read. Get this book if you want to know the minds of a drug dealer/stick-up men, etc, getting hooked by the fast money life and the women that trail along. All I can say is they prove that it ain't worth it in the end.

This is the BOMB!,

I love this author. I read all of his books with the exception
of "Sincerely yours" which I'm running out to get. His books keep me hooked. I can't put the books down and get extremely depressed when they are over. I find myself angry, upset, sad and pissed with the characters like they are real people. I'm totally in his world when I'm reading his novels. This story was so crazy good I finished it in one day. Al please please please keep doing your thing.

DON'T get caught SLEEPIN' on this book!!!,

This review is from: Caught 'em Slippin' (Paperback)
As an industry professional, I know all too well about the deluge of crappy street lit on the market, and as of late haven't bothered to read much of it anymore.
But, one day last year, I happened to read Block Party and was really moved by the strength of the writing and the story itself. I immediately bought No Exit after that and was impressed once again, and vowed to follow Mr. Banks' writing career. It had been months since I read a book in this genre so I stole a curious glance at a table of books set up in midtown NYC, and my heart skipped a beat when I saw Caught 'Em Slippin! It was on after that, I started reading while walking TO the subway. This book is definitely the author's best yet, for it is fast-paced, comical, tragic, and terrifying...and you will hold your breath as you near the riveting end. It tells the story of Miranda; a siren that leads hustlers to their deaths, Sha-Rock; her greedy, psychopathic boyfriend for whom she will do anything while sacrificing and stifling her own positive aspirations, Killer Cal; the RUTHLESS psychopath in the blood and money thirsty trio, and all of the unfortunate souls who cross their paths - and seldom live to tell about it. Killer Cal was NUTSO and my favorite character just because he was written in a way that you had to feel sorry for him, but were deathly afraid when you saw his name appear on the page. Banks delves into the mind of a psycho with unabashed precision and will make you take a closer look at those we normally dismiss as "just crazy", while making you laugh, cry and shudder at the same time! Banks has a true gift for storytelling because his works are wistful, unapologetic and REAL, unlike the many other formula writers who think that combining kilos, cars, sex, guns, and hoes will make a story tell itself.I simply cannot say enough good things about this book and URGE you to find out for yourself exactly what I am talking about, you will not regret it. Can't wait for Block Party 2!!!

I Got Caught In This Book!,
By OOSA Online Book Club "O.O.S.A. Gets It Read!" (World Wide Web, USA) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE)
This review is from: Caught 'em Slippin' (Paperback)
In this "do dirt, get dirt" tale, Al-Saadiq introduces an unforgettable cast of characters. The characters were so real that as I was reading, I felt I was looking right at them. First, you have Miranda, a pretty young thing who's caught up in her man's world not following her own dreams. Miranda shows her loyalty to the fullest to Sha, but is Sha loyal to her? Sha-Rock, a hungry Philly native, is trying to come up any way he can; even if it means taking something that's not his. Then there is Killa Cal, a long lost friend of Sha's who is willing to do anything for him as long as at the end of the day he can pull on his glass pipe. Sha's boy Jimmy is from another state, but is he obeying the street code? Rounding out the cast is Tammy, Miranda's best friend; or is she? Will Sha and Miranda both remain loyal in an environment full of disloyalty and greed?
This book was one of the best I've read this year. My favorite character was Killer Cal, Crazy Cal is what I called him. I was at work and I couldn't wait to get home to the book. I was telling people about Sha, Miranda, Jimmy, and last but not least my man Killer! I also enjoyed Mr.Saadiq's guest appearance giving out three and four pieces, and I'm not talking about crack or chicken. I'm talking about boxing moves. If you have not copped this book yet, you should. It will have you from the first page to the last.

First shout out goes out to Sha-Rock. You did the damn thang and stayed all the way live to the end. You taught me the ins and the outs of hustling and getting hustled. Trying to bling will get you caught slippin'.
Next, I want to give a shout out to Killa Cal, without you I wouldn't have known that crackheads and serial killers could be one in the same. Next, shouts out to Jimmy. You were my boy all the way through until you punked out and you had to get dealt with. Last but not least, Miranda. Without you none of this would have been possible. You were a true soldier. Even at the end you gave all the women out there the power to know that not only can men get their hustle on but so can women. Mr. Al-Saadiq reminds me of a street Maya Angelou. He is a definite must read. |
