A thousand points of light, January 29, 2000

Originally released by Vanguard in 1967, this bizarre seminal San Francisco psychedelic relic had been a collectible for years. Though mildly reminiscent of SF psychedelia circa 1967, _Cauldron_ is unique, representing the happy marriage between "out there" psych and acid-drenched musique concrete. Imagine _Saucerful of Secrets_-era Pink Floyd fronted by Grace Slick with a sinus infection. Easily one of the strangest albums in a field of music where oddity is expected. Some of my favorites include a very druggy version of Billie Holiday's "God Bless the Child" and the exceedingly nice psychotic rant that rounds out this fine reissue.

Eerie, trippy rock, a decade ahead of its time.
