What's this? Jazz. Hard hat jazz., May 24, 2011

You know how convenient it is when you have liner notes to tell you what is what when you write your coment? Well, here you have only your ears and basic discographical info to rely upon. And, as ffar as my ear can take me, this is a very strong contemporary jazz outing...
The international band, lead by the Slovenian drummer Gasper Bertoncelj investigates the leaders original compositions, some very broody and pensive, some ellegantly swinging, some hard-driving. Sometimes you hear a hard-bop funkish touch ("It happened again" for instance), sometimes the band is as cool and introspective as it gets.
All these tunes are played beautifully by the top-notch group consisting of the leader of the date and: Vincent Herring, Jeremy Pelt, Boris Mihelich and Boris Kozlov.
Now, adding a standard (Porter's "Love for Sale") never heart no one
and "What's this" is probably a modernist take on "What is this thing called love"...
So, there's quite enough of diversity here (which also never heart no one, at least IMHO)
