Book Description

May 1, 2001
Constantine Cavafy lived in relative obscurity for most of his 70 years, but is now considered one of the most powerful and important poets of the twentieth century. This timely biographical re-issue, updated for students and poetry lovers alike, explores the man behind the words, and reveals a scintillating life shaped by beauty, complexity and love. A new generation of poets and scholars can now attempt to capture the deceptively simple and penetrating charm of Cavafy’s work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful biography, April 21, 2006

This biography of Cavafy is very informative and interesting. It presents the poet's life in a vivid and concise way, without burdening the reader with too much unnecessary information. It's comparable to Costas Montis' great autobiographical novel Afentis Batistas in the sense that they both talk about the lives of two remarkable Greek poets of the 20th century, Cavafy and Montis, very similar in their technique and style. I have also been reading Seferis' biography, which is interesting but a little too long and detailed.
