5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Book
Coile's book gives great insight to the Cavalier, what you can expect, behaviors, day-to-day care, and long term treatments. After reading Coile's book and following some suggestions, our new Cavalier has become a wonderful family memeber in less than a week. To anyone who is thinking about adopting a cavalier to somebody who just did, this book is a must read!!!!

2.0 out of 5 stars syringohydromyelia in Cavaliers--important
Please note that this may have been a great book when it was written in 1999, but how any review in 2005 can recommend this book with four stars is beyond me. A very serious genetic disorder in Cavaliers has become TOO common and is found in all bloodlines. This disease, which did not become widely identified in Cavaliers until 2003, should be thoroughly researched by...

5.0 out of 5 stars informative and well-written, July 21, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Cavalier King Charles Spaniel (Barron's Complete Pet Owner's Manuals) (Paperback)
I've read dozens of books written about dogs in the past few months and this is one of the best. Not only is it well-written, but the information is all pertinent to this breed. Many books feature a few chapters on the breed and the rest is just basic info on crate training, puppy behavior, etc. But Ms.Coile relates all these aspects to the particular needs of Cavs. Very helpful!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Helpful Introduction to the Breed, May 6, 2002

This review is from: Cavalier King Charles Spaniel (Barron's Complete Pet Owner's Manuals) (Paperback)
This book answered all my initial questions about the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel with honesty and candor about the ups and downs of Cavalier ownership. I especially liked the sections about genetic predispositions and temperament. The only thing not covered in depth was how expensive these dogs are! However, I still recommend it highly as a first step in information-gathering about the breed.

Wonderfully written, very informative book for beginners considering this breed of dog. I truly appreciated Ms. Colie's cander regarding both good and bad aspects of the breed.

This review is from: Cavalier King Charles Spaniel (Barron's Complete Pet Owner's Manuals) (Paperback)
Please note that this may have been a great book when it was written in 1999, but how any review in 2005 can recommend this book with four stars is beyond me. A very serious genetic disorder in Cavaliers has become TOO common and is found in all bloodlines. This disease, which did not become widely identified in Cavaliers until 2003, should be thoroughly researched by anyone interested in acquiring a Cavalier. It is not in this book. Go into this with your eyes wide open. We love our Cavalier and would not trade him for anything. But he has had major brain surgery at a prestigious university vet hospital, pre- and post-surgical MRI's, and is on expensive medication 3 times daily. He cannot be walked on a leash because of pain, even with the medication. If you want "cutesy" information, buy a book. If you want real information, go on-line.

Added from Cavalier Health on 9/13/2006: "Researchers conservatively estimate that at least 50% of CKCSs have occipital hypoplasia (or caudal occipital malformation syndrome -- COMS), the skull bone malformation believed to cause syringomyelia."

3.0 out of 5 stars A Good starting place, April 8, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Cavalier King Charles Spaniel (Barron's Complete Pet Owner's Manuals) (Paperback)
I got this book when my Cavalier puppy first came home. I needed a good book on basics - nothing too complex and nothing designed specifically for breeders or showing. I only wanted bird's eye views of history and genetics, etc. and this was perfect. Once I get over puppyhood and can get more involved with the breed, I will need something more involved than this, but this is an excellent place to start.

5.0 out of 5 stars Most in-depth care and health information, February 7, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Cavalier King Charles Spaniel (Barron's Complete Pet Owner's Manuals) (Paperback)
This book has the best information about caring for your Cavalier of any of the books. It even has a special section on understanding mitral valve (heart)disease, which is a too-common problem in the breed.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a great book for new owners!, May 26, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Cavalier King Charles Spaniel (Barron's Complete Pet Owner's Manuals) (Paperback)
I just got this book today and it is really great! It has everything I would ever need to know about caring for my new puppy that I will be getting in august. I decided to find a good book to study up on so that when the puppy comes I will be prepared to be the best companion I can possibly be. This book will help a lot. Plus, it has tons of beautiful color pictures! I reccommend it to anyone considering a Cavalier as a pet. It is one in a million!

5.0 out of 5 stars Book covers everything the average owner would need to know., October 12, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Cavalier King Charles Spaniel (Barron's Complete Pet Owner's Manuals) (Paperback)
This book covers everything that the average person would need to know about keeping their new puppy and would also interest the novice breeder with some of the finer points of the breed including color genetics. Who could ask for more? A very fine book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Cavalier King Charles Spaniel book, December 23, 2004
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Cavalier King Charles Spaniel (Barron's Complete Pet Owner's Manuals) (Paperback)
Having 2 Cavaliers this book is very helpful. It explains everything you need to know from training to health. It explains what food, grooming, and behavior techniques need to be implemented to ensure a well behaved dog. There is a chapter of how to prevent boredom, and seperation anxiety that is common in Cavaliers. How to choose a good puppy and breeder is very helpful if you are looking to adopt one. It is also good reference to people know about the breed.
