Book Description

March 1989 And Other Stories

The "Cavalleria Rusticana" is a story written by Giovanni Verga in 1880, and belonging to his first collection of short stories, entitled "Vita nei campi" (Life of Field). It is a story of love and jealousy, set in a village in Sicily, Vizzini, in the late nineteenth century.
Verga made a theatrical transposition in 1884, the debut of the writer in drama. Cavalleria Rusticana was first performed 14 January 1884 by the company Cesare Rossi at Teatro Carignano in Turin, with Eleonora Duse in the role of Santuzza and Flavio Andò in the role of Turiddu. The drama was a major success.
In 1890, the composer Pietro Mascagni, wanting to participate in a contest held by the publisher Sonzogno, asked his friend Giovanni Targioni-Tozzetti, poet and professor of literature, to write a booklet. Targioni-Tozzetti chose Cavalleria Rusticana, a popular novel by Giovanni Verga as the basis. He and his colleague Guido Menasci worked for correspondence Mascagni, sending the verses on post cards.
The first performance of Cavalleria Rusticana was an unprecedented success, with Mascagni who was recalled on stage 4 times by the audience's applause, and won first prize in the competition. That same year, following the sell-out performances at the Teatro Costanzi, the opera was performed throughout Italy, as well as in Berlin and London (at the Shaftesbury Theatre in October 1891 and the Royal Opera House in May 1892).
The book contains the short story by Giovanni Verga, the text of his adaptation for the theater and the booklet written by Giovanni Targioni-Tozzetti and Guido Menasci for the opera of Pietro Mascagni.
