5.0 out of 5 stars This storage device doesn't disappoint
I bought this external hard drive back in January and I love it. I bought this one because I quickly filled up my 40GB Seagate external hard drive and wanted to upgrade to a storage device big enough so that I didn't have to worry about running out of space. I had never heard of this brand before so I was worried I'd be disappointed, but that wasn't the case. I feel this...

1.0 out of 5 stars I got VERY lucky!, April 29, 2007

I bought this drive about 8 months ago to be used periodically to backup my "invaluable" data (photos, videos, music, etc). My intent was to only plug it in when I needed to store new files, then disconnect it to keep it completely safe.

Before I bought it, I had read reviews that some people had problems with the power not working properly at times that seemed to be a loose-fitting connector in the enclosure. I figured it was no big deal if mine had that problem since I wasn't going to use it a lot and I could always try taping the cord in place to ensure a good connection. Just my luck, it seemed my drive DID in fact have a problem staying on. But I was willing to live with it. In the eight months since I bought it, it spent maybe a total of an hour turned on while transferring data.

The other day I attempted to connect the drive for some backups. I plugged it in to the power strip and set about trying to get the drive to turn on. After about 5 minutes I smelled something funny. I looked around and finally found that the power brick was smoking profusely! I immediately unplugged it and stood there holding the brick by the cord as I watched sections of the plastic casing melting. I was very, very lucky that I was standing there and that I didn't leave the drive turned on at all times or my house might be a pile of ashes right now! My advice - if you do buy one of these and find that the power is not working in any way, SEND IT BACK IMMEDIATELY!

I feel this hard drive is superb quality at a fantastic price. I do recommend using the stand it comes with rather than laying it flat on a shelf or on top of your PC because it does get very warm that way. With the stand, the unit stays nice and cool.

This product is sold 3rd party through Tiger Direct, so be aware that you will have to pay shipping (you can't qualify for Super Saver free shipping) and you also have to pay taxes.

If you too are skeptical about brands you haven't heard of, I'm here to put your mind at ease. This product will meet your needs by providing a ridiculous amount of storage at an unbeatable price with the utmost quality in performance and design.

1.0 out of 5 stars one month life span, August 26, 2007
I bought two of these units for MP3 archival purposes. Both failed within one month. My sister had the first and just decided to pitch it. Cavalry replaced the second (my shipping to California), and it too has recently failed (IO errors). Great archive; time to re-rip my 2500 CDs. Avoid Cavalry products!

1.0 out of 5 stars Piece of Junk, July 27, 2007
This product is worse than useless. After I bought it, I read several reviews panning it. I bought it for backup of graphic files, especially photos. After I spent some time organizing my files and backing them up to the Cavalry external hard drive, I tried to transfer the files to another, internal hard drive. I kept getting read errors and having to start over. Fortunately, I was able to preserve the data by being persistent and copying small segments at a time. I haven't used the hard drive since.

3.0 out of 5 stars Useful but scary, May 6, 2007
I've had this item now for three months. I use it to back up my home PC, my office laptop and my 10 year old son's PC. It doesn't take long to back things up with this unit. I have tons of pictures and MP3's on all three computers, and it backed them up in no time at all and I can access these files just as quickly as I can with an internal hard drive. I keep it turned off most of the time. One night I accidentally left it on and it started making some pretty scary "clicking" sounds at 3:00 a.m.! I turned it off, let the unit cool down for a day and its worked fine ever since. I'm just a little nervous about having all my stuff on a unit that apparently doesn't like being left on too long, but since I only use this is a backup unit, I'm not too worried. The only other gripe I have is that the stand that it came with did not fit the unit. the screw holes were in the wrong place and the screws provided were way too small.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cavalry 160 GB HD, April 25, 2007
This review is from: Cavalry 160 GB USB 2.0 Hard Drive (Personal Computers)
I got this HD in yesterday to back up my MP3 player so I did not have to load up my internal HD on my computer.
Product works just as described so far, plug in the USB cable turn it on an the computer recognizes it right away.
The HD itself makes no noise, very quite. It is also a nice size and does not take up any room at all.
The unit does get a tad on the warm side when on for extended times but it is not all that bad.
My only gripe at the moment is I don't understand how the stupid side stand is supposed to be mounted to the HD itself.

If I run into problems in the future I will update my review but so far so good.

1.0 out of 5 stars Worked good til a few days, November 13, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Cavalry 160 GB USB 2.0 Hard Drive (Personal Computers)
I received the product quickly after I paid for it, and upon receiving it, it was in new condition. As I plugged in the hard drive into my computer, it was instantly recognized, and I was able to use it as I would any usb flash drive. But after a few days, maybe a week and a half, it stopped working. When I would turn it on, the light would flash red for a second, and then go blue, but there would be no "thinking" flashing of the light, and the computer would no longer register the hard drive as connected. I tried to go the website to see what could be done about this problem, but upon typing in the site, I got a 404 error. I am now displeased with this product, and would likely not purchase another product from this seller.

1.0 out of 5 stars What a fiasco!, August 6, 2007
I just bought this drive a couple of months ago and have only been using it for about a couple of weeks and today I got the red light of death. It flickered blue and then red and then blue...I immediately set about copying the image files I had just been working on and I see that the files are being copied intermittently (when the light flickers blue - a few MB's of files copy, then it's red again and copying stops, then blue...). Right now, if it keeps going, it will take about 11 hours to copy this one folder of images - OUCH! As soon as I get as much of my recent work off as I can, this is being sent back and it will be the last time I buy a Cavalry Hard Drive!
