Cavalry Scout is without a doubt a book that any man or women would enjoy reading. The author invites you into the world of 'Thomas Mitchem', a son, a man, a Cavalry Scout. Whether your on the front lines of war or watching the dynamics unfold with each relationship, it is the relationships you establish with people that bonds the human spirit. The author creates a story line that will definitely make your five senses come alive! This is a book you will not want to put down!

Strong military fiction,
By A Customer
This review is from: Cavalry Scout (Paperback)
"Cavalry Scout" blends action, tactics and strong characters to create a compelling world of war in the near future. Thomas Mitchem is a strong hero, a man of both book learning and military know-how, who is suddenly in the middle of combat between the U.S. and revived Persian forces. A good read for its writing style, realism and memorable characters.

Confusing,
By A Customer
This review is from: Cavalry Scout (Paperback)
As a Current 19d in the Army National Guard I was excited to find out there was finally a fiction novel about our very exciting but overlooked military profession. That is untilI read this Horrable book. This book is confusing and sinical there is no real plot and the ending is down right retarded. I am ashamed that out Military Profession has been insulted in this way.

It is sad when a good ideal is not fully developed. This book is about a cav scout fighting in a fictious war in the future. Half the time I was reading it I was wondering just what was going on. It seemed all this guy did was ride around sand dunes and complain. The "big picture" is not developed. After reading the book I still dont have a clue as to why we were fighting and whom. Then there is the "UFO" part of the book. I wont give it away, but that part of the book was totally odd. This book could have been so much more. The author could have still used a fictious scenario, but beefed it up more and made it more believable.

I too am an ex Scout and found this book amateurish. The dialog is completely disconnected to time and place.

SCOUTS OUT!,
By Dennis Foley (Seattle, WA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Cavalry Scout (Paperback)
Well, the scouts' should toss this book out at any rate. I am a 19D and happy to see the world of the Cav Scout enter the world of military fiction. Hopefully the next attempt at it won't be by Mr. Michels. The premise of the book is of a soldier writing down his experiences in a war with a Muslim Ultra-Nation for his girlfriend so that she can better understand her scout... Once the book gets going, I found it hard to connect all the dots. It is very jumpy and I often had to go back several pages to figure out what was going on. Sometimes, even that effort was not enough. One page the scouts would be in one location doing one thing, then the next paragraph, it seemed weeks had passed with no resolution to the previous situation. My greatest complaint on this book is the missed "golden egg" by the author. There is multiple mention of a "super mystery weapon" that renders the US Airforce combat ineffective. At mid-point into the novel, we even get a glimps of what this weapon is. After this brief glimps, it simply finds its way out of the story, never to be seen again. Had Mr. Michels focused the story around this "weapon" I think he would have found himself and the book would have really shined. There are parts of the book where the author really finds a groove with his choice of words. This goes on for about three or four paragraphs, and the book really picks up speed. The description of what its like to be inside a tank as its destroyed comes to mind as being the best text in the entire book. Sadly, three or four paragraphs are all you get. Overall, it is very apparent that this is a vanity publishing. Poorly written and amaturish. I am giving it two stars simply because it is filling a void for the lack of fiction regarding Cavalry Scouts.

Must Read,
By
This review is from: Cavalry Scout (Paperback)
As a Staff Sergeant, and a Cavalry Scout serving in the US Army, I can personally say this book is the closest thing there is to being there. The story itself is well written and many of the thoughts the characters have , I have had, many times myself. This book was written by someone who, has the title of "Cavalry Scout". So if you want to see the inner workings of a Cavalry Platoon and personnel, then this is a must read book.

As a former Cav Scout, I found a lot of references that I could relate to. Great fictional action. I am looking forward to the next installment. Hooah! As a side note, I read the book only after the author signed it at a dinner meeting. He's the real deal. Scouts Out!!

As an Ex Cavalry Scout who served during the Persian Gulf war,I am blown away by this book.Though it is fiction in a war written in the future,Its details of life as an Armored Reconaissance Specialist are so vivid and detailed. The daily life in a Scout Platoon, the operations during movement, all the complexities that involve a Scouts world are contained within its pages. If you want to enter the honor and the horror that is a Scouts world in combat-Read this book!

I hate to do this to a fellow Cav Scout but this book was really bad. As a Cavalry Scout who fought at the battle of 73 Easting during Operation Desert Storm, I'm here to tell you that when it comes to combat operations this book really misses the mark. This book had more in common with a Rambo movie than anything else. Save your money and pick up a copy of Harold Coyle's book "Team Yankee", If you really want insight into whats it's like on a modern day battlefield. It's an oldie but a goodie, even though it's pro Tanker.(You Scouts will get that one.)SCOUTS OUT |
