I received one of these for my 17th birthday; I'm turning 21 this November. This External HDD still runs just as well as the first day I plugged it in and fired it up on our old Dell Dimension 3000 w/ Win-XP x86. It's since also readily accepted Vista (x86) on our Inspiron 1525 Laptop (do yourself a favor and avoid that system like the plague, by the way) and Windows 7 (x64) on my new Acer AS5738PG-6306 Notebook and all without me having to do a single thing but plug it in, switch it on and sit back and drag/drop data.

It is exceptionally quiet, runs cool (thanks to the metallic enclosure), doesn't get fussy at all, requires virtually no upkeep and it also has not damaged or lost a single KB of any single one of the many, many, many files that I have thrown at it over the years (and which has gotten me out of countless tight spots when any of our systems crashed or just needed a good old fashioned new start).

Don't know if this made all the difference for me and this drive, but I always make it a point to "eject" it and to turn it off when I'm not actually using it. I'm sure this has contributed to extending its life so long (and this better protects it from viruses to boot) and now I'm very glad that I did take those extra 5 seconds every time to do so as it is still functioning perfectly fine today.

Without a doubt, my next External HDD purchase will be a Cavalry CAUM, 1TB this time as I am only just now creeping up on the 500GB limit of this drive. When I do get the new drive the one I have now will become strictly a system backup drive while the new one will only be used for data retention (movies, music, documents, pictures etc).

Give it a try... chances are you'll have a very good 4 + years out of it too!!!

Had to reformat the drive to get it to connect to a Windows 7 machine. I was successful at backing up a folder and then it disconnected. Powering it off and on got it to come back only to disappear again. I've had several external hard drives including an older Cavalry but this one is either defective or a bad design.

Warning to those considering a Cavalry drive: don't buy their junk!

I had not one but two Cavalry drives (a 60 gig and a 500 gig). The 500 gig stopped working after just one month of use, and the 60 gig fell apart after just two years. This company's products are not built to last, so don't buy from them unless you want to lose years' worth of data.

I also had one dead in the box. Customer support did not seem surprised by this and had me "reseat" the drive, i.e, take it out and put it back in again, which of course did nothing. Notice how the 5 star reviews praise the "cool" blue light? That may be the best thing you can say about it.

After reading other reviews I got a refund from Costco and bought a WD. So, like others, I never got as far as being able to tell how well it worked.

Why pay more for the same size hard drive? This is a 500GB hard drive for a relatively lesser price. Physically, it is relatively smaller than most other 500GB HD's. It looks nice with the blue lights. Fits easily in the carrying case. Is very quiet and works great. Just plug it in and it's ready to go.. no installation is required. It comes with a software to backup your internal HD with one click.

The product didn't work right out of the box. It was very difficult to reach technical support by phone. Most commonly nobody answered the phone or they didn't return my call when asked to leave a message. I tried email and got help. I was told to reformat the hard drive but to no avail. I became very frustrated with the support and the fact that the product didn't work. Technical support said to return it to them and they would fix it. At this point,I didn't feel comfortable with the product and elected to return it to Amazon.I bought a Free Agent Seagate external hard drive and couldn't be happier.

Really great drive, works exactly as described. No problems during my 2-3 months of using it--I never have to turn it off as the cooling works extremely well. Quiet and reliable. And the light-up front looks cool!

I ordered the Cavalry CAUM37500. Set it up exactly like the manual instructed. The product didn't work at all. Dead right out of the box. I called Cavalry's tech support and after much troubleshooting, the tech concluded that my drive was a lemon. I wish I could comment on how this drive worked but it was dud and basically a $100 paper weight. The product is also a lot heavier and bulkier than many external drives that are out now.
Buy this at your own risk.
