A FANTASTICAL, WORDLESS VOYAGE THROUGH SUBTERRANEAN MAZES
A rat darts across the opening pages, into a hole, and down a long tunnel, stopping under a hammock. A mole man stretches and wakes up, leading the rat and the reader deeper into the tunnel. What follows is a series of dreamlike sequences, each stranger than the last. Brian Ralph, author of the New York Times Graphic Novel Bestseller and YALSA Great Graphic Novel for Teens Daybreak, was a founding member of the influential Providence, Rhode Island, Fort Thunder art collective, which was renowned for the way its members’ work intermingled lowbrow and highbrow art forms—drawing inspiration from comics, video and roleplaying games, and contemporary art. Fort Thunder created the alternative adventure comic and the comic book as artist’s book. Cave~In was seen as the first example of this new approach.
In this wordless classic, special emphasis is placed on the power of gesture. Minimalism allows Ralph to be playful with form—Cave~In’s use of color and crosshatching speaks much more clearly to narrative shifts than is possible in a more conventional text, and the use of different panel shapes and sizes transform the rhythm and pacing of the story. Cave~In is an allages adventure story, jam-packed with monsters, bats, and all manner of unimaginable underground mystery.

Brian Ralph is a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design and is currently a professor of sequential art at the Savannah College of Art and Design.

Mr. Ralph is an amazing illustrator, using his skills to tell the trials of the mole-man, all without words. The story is ironic as well as simple, I think appealing to adults as well as teens. Mole-man's adventures are wonderfully captured with Mr. Ralph's illustrating style. I read it over and over, discovering new detail each time. His work is a real joy.

The illustrations are really expressive and detailed. Not a single word in the book, but you can read a lot from the faces of the characters. The more you read this cool book, the more you'll see. Adults will enjoy this book as well.

First and foremost, it's fun from the first page to the last. Mr. Ralph takes us into a strange world that is mostly compelling, but occasionally repelling--it gets a little gory at times! I went through it a second time and discovered many nuances not seen on the first reading. I highly recommend this book; I hope he does more of them.

Well this will probably be a biast review seeing as brian is my art teacher, but what ever, this book is really good. It was amazing how he can evoke emotions with no words. Read more

Not necessarily for children
Cave-In is a beautiful, rich, and disturbing book. Parents will want to read it themselves before passing it on to smaller children, as portions of it are quite scary. Read more

This book is a must-see item. Incredibly cool. The style is strong and very original, and Mr. Ralph is full of refreshing ideas. I look forward to seeing more of his work.
