Five Stars? Yes...Just Because it's soooo Corny,
By B. Merritt "filmreviewstew.com" (WWW.FILMREVIEWSTEW.COM, Pacific Grove, California United States) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Caveman (DVD)
Everyone has a favorite "stinker" in their home video collection, and this is mine. My girlfriend thinks I'm nuts. My friends cringe and turn the other way whenever I mention it. And my family offers me "special medication" if I try and get them to watch it...again.
But what can I say; I love this film. It's banality, shallowness, and out-and-out unscientific approach to modern man's changes and discoveries throughout the eons is just hilarious to watch. It's a ridiculous film, and so should be watched with that in mind. Why? The story is about Atouk played by former Beatle master Ringo Starr, who is kicked out of his caveman tribe by the muscular and massive chief Tonda (probably lineman John Matuszak's only role on film, I'd guess) because he's in love with the chief's woman, Lana (a VERY busty Barbara Bach). Once out on his own, Atouk begins to make new friends. They include Lar (Dennis Quaid), Tala (Shelley Long), Gog (Jack Gilford), Ta (Cork Hubbert), and a gazillion others. Among this rag-tag grouping comes the ability to stand up straight, how to cook a dinosaur egg, how to kill a rather large dragonfly by using someone's face (my favorite part in the film...but I felt bad for Dennis Quaid), the discovery of fire, music, drugs, homosexuality, and weapons, and just about a million years of evolution and discovery all wrapped up in one short, foolish film. So call me a moron. Go ahead, it's okay. But this film is a great no-brainer, laugh-a-minute flick. Now I'll go grunt in the corner for while...

A Clasic Will Always Be A Clasic,

When I first saw this movie many years ago I just loved it. Today it will seem kinda silly but hey this movie is and always will be a classic in my collection. Too bad there are no special futures in this DVD and no special edition will likely come out.
Ringo and Dennis are great, and Shelly is surprisingly not annoying. You will follow these cavemen all the way from learning how to walk erect, discover fire & drugs, ignore an english speaking Japanese and, one of my favorite moments in any movie, the discovery of music. Thank god DVD technology came to save all time classics like this one.

This is my favorite movie of all time. It takes you through the struggles of the cave man days in the most hilarious manner. If you have never seen it before, then gather up a bunch of your friends and have them come over to watch it for nonstop laughs! This is one of those tapes you will want to keep. I still have images of some of the scenes that you just can never get out of your mind.

Sure, the dinosaurs look a little ridiculous, but that makes them comical. Great acting, tons of laughs, etc. Get it. You'll love it.

Totally silly and hilarious movie. Starring some people you never thought would be in a movie together, such as Ringo Starr, Dennis Quaid and Shelly Long. I saw this movie originally as a kid and could'nt wait for it to arrive on DVD. Now that it's here it's now a family favorite. There are some scenes not appropriate for children but those are light and few.

This was one of the best movies of all time. It was filmed before I was born and I still love it. My parents and older brother also love it. Evidently, it is a movie for the entire family. "Atook Alunda Lana"

Zillion Years Ago,
By Ned "java_ned" (Eldersburg, Maryland United States) - See all my reviews

If you want to see what life was like One Zillion Years ago on October 9th, then this movie is for you. We have Atouck (Ringo Starr) that is kicked out of his tribe for wanting Lana (Barbara Bach) who is the tribe chief's (John Matuszak) girl. He meets up with his old friend Lar (Dennis Quaid) and meets new ones to include Tala (Shelley Long) and they all learn the secrets of fire, the finer art of cooking, and how we learned to walk upright. Most of the movie's dialog is nothing more than grunts and groans except for the Chinese guy, he speaks English, or course. A wonderful and funny movie. The DVD contains both the Widescreen and Standard version.

the Best Comedy forever,
This review is from: Caveman (DVD)
Very nice movie from 1981 which was remastered in 2002. It's good thing for home DVD collection. You need no translation for "cave" language, because everything is funny and understandable.

What a charming little movie,
By Greg Hirst (Casper, WY USA) - See all my reviews

CAVEMAN, directed by JAWS co-writer Carl Gottleib, may not bring waves of gut-busting, laugh out loud moments, but there is still a real joy in watching this colorful clever little film. The very nature of it is silly, and the real magic is in the performances by Ringo Starr as Atouk, Tunda the chief, Shelly Long as the giddy and beautiful blonde, and Dennis Quaid as Atouk's buddy. It's these performances, their energy and silliness (but not slapsticky) that sell this joyful movie, as there is little comprehensible dialogue to relate ideas or situations. The humor, as a pleasant surprise, leans more towards satire and not tastelessnes or slapstick. Kids will enjoy the colorfulness and lightness, but mature audiences should find it a fun and lighthearted romp. Recommended

Damn, the only thing that's missing is the extras!,
By Russell Wayne Brown "CriticalBill" (TX United States) - See all my reviews

One of the most orginal comedies is now coming to DVD and not a moment to soon. Everything from the discorvery of Mary Jane, to the 1st hand shake, to the invetion of music....everything is well placed and, if not laugh out loud funny, it will put a smile on your face.Ringo Starr, Dennis Quiad, and Shelly Long all star as the outcasted cavemen who start off and start there own civilazition with members of another tribe. One let down was the exclusion of a Dictionary. When in theaters, the moviegoers got a little dictinary to interptate the words because they are all made up(other that the Japaness guy who speaks english...lol) is one thing that I wished they had included here. Well, at lest we have a good long lost comedy on DVD and here's hopeing of a Speacial Ed. later on. |
