4.0 out of 5 stars
excellent performance and set list., May 17, 2011
This review is from: Cavern Club Liverpool 2004 (Audio CD)
there are two reasons why i gave this double cd live performance at liverpool's world famous cavern club four stars instead of five: 1. the cd case stinks. it's hard to take the cd out. 2. the liner notes are a bit misleading. marty balin is listed as being part of the lineup on this cd but actually didn't perform at this gig. on the positive side, the band sounds great. i love all these live shows recorded with diane mangano on vocals and prairie prince on drums. she makes all these grace slick era songs her own and turns out an outstanding vocal performance. prairie prince is a bad arse drummer who also rises to the occasion on this performance. the setlist features a lot of their usual live staples that are always welcome and sound great: volunteers, white rabbitt, somebody to love, crown of creation. also there's the rarely performed song cycle from paul kantner's 1970 album, the first released under the moniker jefferson starship, also love song #8 on the second disc, called fat angel (definitely the highlight of this set for me) and planet earth rock n roll orchestra. a lot of great stuff on this disc. i am just getting into a lot of jefferson starship ( i just saw them live) and if you dig j.s., i definitely recommend you seek out this cd. i would just swap out the case for another one. also, seek out some of the shows that feature marty balin.
