I read this book aloud for my 8 and 12 year olds in one sitting, and we all loved it. Nearly every two-page spread contains a dramatic photograph. The book is full of fascinating information, including two pages on speleothems (like cave pearls and gypsum flowers) which isn't mentioned in the table of contents. The science is explained in a clear, easy to understand way, and we all learned something new.

This book is right in that sweet spot for first to third grade readers. It is packed with full-color photographs and a good text that doesn't talk down to children. Glossary at the back.
