I read this book aloud for my 8 and 12 year olds in one sitting, and we all loved it. Nearly every two-page spread contains a dramatic photograph. The book is full of fascinating information, including two pages on speleothems (like cave pearls and gypsum flowers) which isn't mentioned in the table of contents. The science is explained in a clear, easy to understand way, and we all learned something new.

This book is right in that sweet spot for first to third grade readers. It is packed with full-color photographs and a good text that doesn't talk down to children. Glossary at the back.

This small book has tons of information in it. Just right for a 6-8 year old who is interested in caves.

I didn't read what ages this book was for and bought it for my 3, 5, and 8 year old boys. We were about to go tour a cave and I wanted them to read a little about it prior. My kids didn't last 10 min into the book because it was just too much information for their ages. I was hoping for a few sentences per page. Instead there are a few paragraphs per page of in depth descriptions and terminology. Next time I will pay more attention to the age recommendations. I'm sure this book would be great for older kids interested in caves.
