4.0 out of 5 stars good retail drive
I bought this after I had two IBM 75GXP drives start showing errors. It is significantly quieter than those drives, measures about the same speed and from my research is more reliable (although my research also uncovered the fact that old floppy disks may be more reliable than the IBM drives). I had no problem installing this in my computer and installing Win 2K on it...

1.0 out of 5 stars A constant stream of bad clusters
After about a month of use, my hard drive started having bad clusters. I contacted Western Digital to have the hard drive replaced or repaired, but was told that my hard drive was distributed originally in Europe (although I bought it at a store in Rochester, NY) and that they would not be able to offer any support. I ate the entire cost of the defective hard drive.

I bought this after I had two IBM 75GXP drives start showing errors. It is significantly quieter than those drives, measures about the same speed and from my research is more reliable (although my research also uncovered the fact that old floppy disks may be more reliable than the IBM drives). I had no problem installing this in my computer and installing Win 2K on it. The drive comes with a few screws, and an ultra dma cable (use this for best performance). If you are not using Win 2K or Win XP you may have to monkey around with ultra dma modes.

This was a good buy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Drive.....Good Price, December 28, 2001

Western Digital is a pretty popular company and for a good reason. I have a this drive but only 20 gigs which i have had for about 2 years and have never had a problem. I tend to beat up on my drives constantly moving, adding, deleting, reformating constantly. But it has always held up.

For everyone out there looking for a new hard drive this is a good choice, although i also have a maxtor drive and think that no one makes a more dependable amd reliable drive than maxtor this drive is a nice and little cheaper option.

ONE QUICK TIP.........No matter what drive you buy your computer probably has a 5400rpm drive (this is the speed that the drive spins) (revolutions per mintue) spend the extra 10 or 20 bucks and get a 7200rpm you will notice a huge increase in performace from your system anytime you access your hard drive (moving large files, playing games, etc.) I have seen some benchmarks where a 7200 gave a 15% increase in system performance than a 5400rpm !!

I just got this drive in 60GB. I had some problems with Maxtor and Windows XP -- so I jumped ship and bought the Western Digital becuase it had the "Designed for Windows XP" label. All I did was plugged it in and booted with the Windows XP CD and I was up and running in no time! So this drive is great for people who are novices at hard drive installs(and are using XP)!! I think it's a little noisy-- and a bit more expensive than others(you pay for the 7200RPM)- but I reccomend it to those of you who want to avoid the headaches!

4.0 out of 5 stars Only a hard drive, no manual, box or utilities, September 1, 2011

Hard drive came a day early, but came in foil wrap- no original box, no utility disk, no instructions. Not a huge deal, just have to print the directions off or read online while installing, have to download software to diskette (yes- it is an old computer, but dependable backup). Seller should disclose what's being shipped- almost give perception it's refurbished and not new. Double checked, vendor's listing does show boxed product- again, just a bit misleading, good price.

5.0 out of 5 stars great performance, December 28, 2001

i just got this drive a month ago as a replacement for my two aging hard drives which were 6 and 12 gb. so far i have had no problems with it and it has performed fine. the only problem i had was related to fdisk when it displayed the size of the drive as around 10 gigs. when i used the included software to format it though everything worked fine and better than fdisk has ever worked for me. my computer configuration is amd 900 mhz, sb audigy platinum, linksys network card, nvidia gforce 2 mx400, and now this hard drive.

Western Digital makes the best HD's out there. I havn't used this one yet it's a standby just in case for my old computer.
I don't worry about it not working because WD hd's have never failed me. Packaged well and came in a timely manner.

Thanks Amazon!

Out of all the Hard Drive manufacturers out there, Western Digital is still the one I use and recommend to others. The WD800BB I just purchased from Amazon was no disappointment. It came professionally packaged, installed easily, and is still working fine.

In a time when 80 gig hard drive are out of style if not use, this was a good unit. Ran continuously for three years without a lost bite. The drive did not produce much noise while spinning, however you could hear the heads moving back and forth, but for me that is a good sign. Unexpected movement of the drive head did lead me to a virus.
