Caving In America, June 26, 2009
This review is from: Caving in America: The Story of the National Speleological Society (Hardcover)
This magnificent book is hardback with sewn-through binding. It is 446 pages long and provides a wonderful, detailed, and fascinating history of the National Speleological Society from 1941 (when it was founded) up through 1991 when this book was published. As the cover proudly proclaims, this is: "The Story of the National Speleological Society, 1941-1991. Commerating 50 Years of History and Growth." The book is well illustrated with photos of club members and club activities during this 50 year period.
Speleology is the scientific study of caves and the members of the NSS are a very diverse lot. Their interests include exploration, surveying, geology, biology, history, archaeology, photography, and much more. Most members are amateurs with a great love for spelology as their hobby. A few are professional scientists.
If you are a hard-core cave explorer and a member of the National Speleological Society, you will find this book both fascinating and a great source of information. If you like caves and are not a member of the NSS, the book may convince you that you should join.
