Book Description

May 2, 2007
Set in Caxley, the quiet country town neighboring the village of Fairacre, The Caxley Chronicles follow two intertwined families, the Howards and the Norths, through the tumultuous first half of the twentieth century. The first Caxley tale, The Market Square, introduces the deep-rooted camaraderie of Septimus Howard and Bender North, whose friendship survives misunderstandings, the tragedy of war, and the bitterness of loss. The story of their families continues through the generations. The second tale, The Howards of Caxley, tells of Edward Howard, grandson to them both. Edward flies for the Royal Air Force Reserve as England prepares for another war -- and Caxley braces itself for overwhelming changes.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Caxley Chronicles, March 3, 2011

This review is from: The Caxley Chronicles (Paperback)
Follows two merchant families in Caxley, a thriving market town near Fairacre. As usual, Miss Read describes their ups and downs in vivid detail, allowing us to commisserate and rejoice with them. The reader gets a glimpse of small-town life in an England that no longer exists, and we are the poorer for its demise.

This is a great book following several generations of people in Caxley - those of you familiar with Miss Read know where this is! But, even if you've never read Miss Read before, this book is nice. It's a great mellow read full of gritty events just as in real life.
