Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

An undeniably complex and difficult process, passing tests for the Cisco Certified Internetworking Expert (CCIE) certification requires unparalleled, in-depth knowledge. In The Cisco CCIE Study Guide, Roosevelt Giles provides you with help on the five test-subject areas (three are needed to pass, along with a lab test, which the book does not cover). By covering the broad strokes of networking and the dauntingly obscure details of many network protocols, Giles comprehensively explains Cisco technology. The chapters are organized around networking topics such as TCP/IP, data link switching, asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM), and Novell NetWare. Each chapter concludes with a set of sample questions. You may find that you disagree with the answers to the questions given at the back of the book, but keep in mind that the tests reflect Cisco's viewpoint on all the technology.

The included CD-ROM contains sample code for many examples in the book and additional sample questions. For anyone preparing for the written tests for the CCIE, this book is guaranteed to be a big help. --Robert Frankland

1.0 out of 5 stars Useless, January 31, 2000
This review is from: The Ccie Study Guide (Hardcover)
Way too many critical errors. Errors in the diagrams, even errors in the answers to the study questions. DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK. Use Doyle or Caslow and CCO to study for the exam.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poorly writted (poor grammer, full of mistakes), November 5, 1999
This review is from: The Ccie Study Guide (Hardcover)
When I first scanned through the book, I thought it was worth it to purchase due to its intensive amount of detail on various internetworking protocols at many of the OSI layers. However, as I started to read the various chapters I got a different impression. First, as many others have noted, the book is riddled with mistakes, both syntax errors and flawed "facts". Granted, no book is ever perfect on first print in this sense (I've even found a few mistakes in the Cisco Press books), but this one went well beyond the flaws I've seen in other books. The author and publisher obviously did a very poor job of proof-reading. Second, some of the grammar and explanations in the book were poor. For example, some sentences/paragraphs tended to contradict each other. Others were sometimes very vague in their explanation of a concept or technology. I am not a novice in this field, having done network engineering and have an in-depth knowledge of protocols such as TCP/IP, and network devices and architecture. In short, a major re-editing of this book is required before I even pay a dime for it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Error Rich, July 19, 2000

Kasey A. King (Wichita, KS USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Ccie Study Guide (Hardcover)
This guide has more errors in it than ANY technical manual I have ever read. They appear both in the sample questions and the in-chapter examples. I would wait for the 2nd edition...
