Way too many critical errors. Errors in the diagrams, even errors in the answers to the study questions. DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK. Use Doyle or Caslow and CCO to study for the exam.

Poorly writted (poor grammer, full of mistakes),
By John Sasso, Jr (Albany, NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Ccie Study Guide (Hardcover)
When I first scanned through the book, I thought it was worth it to purchase due to its intensive amount of detail on various internetworking protocols at many of the OSI layers. However, as I started to read the various chapters I got a different impression. First, as many others have noted, the book is riddled with mistakes, both syntax errors and flawed "facts". Granted, no book is ever perfect on first print in this sense (I've even found a few mistakes in the Cisco Press books), but this one went well beyond the flaws I've seen in other books. The author and publisher obviously did a very poor job of proof-reading. Second, some of the grammar and explanations in the book were poor. For example, some sentences/paragraphs tended to contradict each other. Others were sometimes very vague in their explanation of a concept or technology. I am not a novice in this field, having done network engineering and have an in-depth knowledge of protocols such as TCP/IP, and network devices and architecture. In short, a major re-editing of this book is required before I even pay a dime for it.

Error Rich,
By Kasey A. King (Wichita, KS USA) - See all my reviews

This guide has more errors in it than ANY technical manual I have ever read. They appear both in the sample questions and the in-chapter examples. I would wait for the 2nd edition...

A book published before proof-reading.,
This review is from: The Ccie Study Guide (Hardcover)
Nice coverage, however full of mistakes. Do not expect to be equipped with the required knowledge to solve the following questions. Do not waste your time using answer keys.

Excellent Sleeping Aid!,

This review is from: The Ccie Study Guide (Hardcover)
Picked up a pile of CCIE/CCNA related materials at the bookstore to find a good one. Read parts of each one (really liked the Sybex CCNA book and Cisco IP Routing Reference (not by cisco)), and got to this tome. Boy I was excited. All this info in one place. Better examine it in depth...They came and woke me up, telling me I was snoring. This was at Barnes and Noble, Denver. How embarassing. I had only made it 2 1/2 pages... This book would make an excellent cure for insomnia. I would not purchase it for any other purpose.

Good attempt at all conclusive CCIE prep guide, but sloppy,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Ccie Study Guide (Hardcover)
I guess McGraw-Hill was in rush to jump on the bandwagon of CCIE prep books. This book has so many errors in the questions, which appear at the end of each chapter, that you start to wonder if the questions you believe to be right are indeed correct. Also the discussion of various topics are at times unclear as if the author was just throwing out a bunch of info instead of establishing a core of understanding. I suppose as a vehicle to getting people through the Cisco exams this book is of value, but it does not endear itself as great reference for internetworking specifics.

The worst book on Network technology in existance,
This review is from: The Ccie Study Guide (Hardcover)
I can't believe this book actually made it to print. The number of blatant errors is unreal. Wish I had read these reviews before I picked it up.

A Necessary Evil in CCIE Written Prep,
By rgondek@intx.net (San Antonio, TX) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Ccie Study Guide (Hardcover)
I just passed the CCIE Written, and used this book as my primary resource. However, I found myself questioning and cross-checking a lot of material in this book with other reference material from Cisco, IBM, Novell, RFCs, etc. It provides better coverage of the topics than any other single source, but you have to read with an "open mind" and not be afraid to question what you read. You pretty much have to go with this book until other CCIE written study guides come out.No coverage of the IOS or the lab at all - this is for the written test only.

Terribly written and filled with errors,

This book is so dry it makes you wish you were doing something else. When you don't have anything else to do and get yourself to sit down and read it, it is filled with errors.
