4.0 out of 5 stars the right focus, January 31, 1999
By A Customer
I am a 4th year medical student and have referred to this book contantly on my rotations. i find that the chapters were lucid and covered just the right amount of depth for each topic. Best of all, the authors focused on all the clinically relevant points of each disease which is a must for the busy clinician. Get it now!

5.0 out of 5 stars Why did I buy Harrison's?, March 22, 2004
By
Seejay "cjcjcjcj" (Earth, superficially) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Cecil Essentials of Medicine (Paperback)
I get a hernia when I pick up Harrison's. I've used it twice this year. I'm a graduating senior, and I've collected all of my upperclassmen's suggestions of books. Cecil's has a bit more info than I'd like, but it's a readable length if you're not a procrastinator like me!
It's extremely well written, and easily understood. It stresses only those topics that we graduating seniors absolutely have to have a clue about by graduation, and it doesn't waste too much paper. It's not a pocketbook, but at about half the physical
size of Harrison's, it's not easy to carry around, either.
If I had to buy only one book out of Harrison's, Cecil's, NMS, and Blueprints, I'd get Cecil's. It's well worth the money.

4.0 out of 5 stars DESIGNED FOR BOTH DOCTORS AND STUDENTS, February 19, 2003
By
reviewer (Zurich, Switzerland.) - See all my reviews
Accessible and highly useful, the format of "Cecil Essentials of Medicine" is unique. This is one of the few broad-scope medical texts, which used simple language to present advanced information. The book is dynamic; and very easy to understand. Its strengths lie in the methodological manner with which it tackled clinical manifestations, diagnosis, and therapeutics. It gives detailed information in each case, without dabbling into anything that is unnecessary.
Anybody who reads this book will appreciate the depth of its coverage. It is a quality designed: a valuable compilation with both doctors and students in mind.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Source for USMLE Step 2, November 28, 2004
This review is from: Cecil Essentials of Medicine (Paperback)
I always used this book as my lifesaver since its first edition. Although it is basically written for medical students, I beleive it is the best source for USMLE Step 2. Everybody has a problem preparing for Medicine part of Step 2 CK. This book does an amazing job of giving all clinical facts without going into unnecessary details. Step 2 CK is about pathophysiology, diagnosis and principles of treatment, and you can find those issues in this book without wasting your time reading bigger books. The new edition is very reader friendly and full of diagrams and algorithms. Don't look at big size. You can easily read this book in a short time. It is written very well and unlike other medicine books, it is not boring.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book!, June 6, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Cecil Essentials of Medicine (Paperback)
I found Cecil's essentials to cover just enough information to be readable. The explanations are much more concise and easier to understand, too. If you are one of those annoying overachievers who must know the full story, then take a year off med school and read Harrisson's. If not, this is the book for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent!, April 25, 2006

This is a fantastic introduction to medicine and also an excellent resource for USMLE Step 2CK. It is definitely a step up from the usual review books and it requires more time to cover. However, it is still quite manageable and I enjoyed reading it. Highly recommended!

4.0 out of 5 stars very nice, July 18, 2005
This review is from: Cecil Essentials of Medicine (Paperback)
I read this book in medical school once. It is an excellent book with all you need from pathophysiology and clinical presentations. However if you are a resident, it may not be in enough depth especially in treatment parts.

I've been looking for a book to be a companion for me throughout medical school and beyond. It should not read like the bible nor should it be flimsy. Cecil is solid, informative and user-friendly.

4.0 out of 5 stars An Ideal Undergraduate Text, April 4, 2006
By
Prof. KNV. (Pondicherry, INDIA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Cecil Essentials of Medicine (Paperback)
This book can definitely be recommended for all undergraduate students in Medicine. It is very colourful and this makes it very reader- friendly too. The algorithms and tables just excell and so are the diagrams which do not feature in many postgraduate texts also. The text is bold and read without eyestrain. The language is simple and eloquent. The paperback cover can be easily converted to a hardbound one.It simply supercedes Davidsons and many other undergraduate texts in Medicine.

4.0 out of 5 stars detailed and accurate, January 16, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Cecil Essentials of Medicine (Paperback)
Cecil's is considered the holy text of medical practitioners for a reason. The book is concise, researched and backed by specialists. The chapters cover various topics from the functions of an organ or segment of the system along with internal and external symptoms for better diagnosis. Cecil's also covers on special topics including, Women's health, Men's health, Elderly, Substance abuse, and Bio-terrorism.

The book also includes treatments, charts, diagrams, and pictures in every chapter and section. Cecil's reads very easily with or without prior knowledge of anatomy or medicinal knowledge. At the end of many chapters is a small article of the future prospects of the section to genetic causes, technology, surgical procedures, drug evaluation, therapy and so forth to allow the student to be aware of these advancements and perhaps be prepared if the procedures pop up in the future.

A worthwhile investment of knowledge for any medical students, pathologists, or writer's library. Do not settle for less, get Cecil's.
