Editorial Reviews

Review

The book may look pretty and will appeal to bibliophiles but most medics want information and top quality advice and this book delivers hugely on this score. It is robust on factual knowledge and best practice and the editorial control is strong.
This book in effect is the 21st century equivalent of the old fashioned medical "tome" which used to inhabit our bookshelves. This edition is far more user friendly and then there is of course the associated website. Bundled with the website, there are other goodies such as a drugs resource which looks good, videos and case histories. You get a superb book which essentially is a detailed general medical textbook which would appeal to junior doctors taking exams or senior doctors wanting to stay up to date.
An interested medic, who wants an up to date general medical textbook which has a website, will enjoy using this package.
Dr. Harry Brown, Univadis

REVIEW OF THE LAST EDITION

Ranks among the best medical textbooks in longevity, comprehensiveness, tradition, and use by practitioners and students alike" - JAMA

Goldman and Ausiello have given the 22nd edition of this venerable textbook a 21st-century remodeling, which sets a new standard that others are sure to follow.

A doctors bible...It is an incredibly useful resource, it's so detailed you may only feel the benefits of it from 3rd year and even in 3rd year it's pretty comprehensive. Covering pretty much every disease I have heard of so far, it includes an array of less common infectious diseases all accompanied by appropriate clinical images, extensive treatment and pathology sections.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cecil, April 10, 2001

I first bought this book in Medical School and I still use it almost every week after 14 years. It is thorough and consise-- provides a bit of theory and a lot of practical information in a scholarly style. If youre a reader, get this book-- you may find yourself reading a reference book in your spare time. I would like to go to a physician who used Cecil Medicine as a reference. If youre not a natural reader, forget it and just buy the latest copy of the Washington Manual.

5.0 out of 5 stars More authoritative, readable and practical than Harrison's, May 27, 2006
You may just be interested in only Harrison's and may ignor Cecil's. But if you pay some attentions and seriously consider Cecil's, I am sure you will find out a lot of superb practical chapters and approaches to patients. Many of the chapters were written by world experts and authorities. Compared with Harrison's, Cecil's may contain more world experts and authorities. Many many chapters, written by the authors from the major well known subspecialty textbooks, were excellent and easy to understand. I highly recommend this textbook to medical students, internal medicine residents and internists.

5.0 out of 5 stars great outline; easily understandable, June 21, 2000
By
This book was first recommended to me by my consultant in internal medicine, so I decided to purchase a copy. So far I have enjoyed the book tremendously. The outlay is great; the depth of coverage is excellent, and it cuts to the meat of internal medicine without giving you distracting [and often confusing] information. Whenever I wanted a general overview of a topic, I turn to this book. For further studies, I use Harrison's. The standard is a bit high for the average medical student though. But if you are an intern, or an IM resident, you'll find the book an invaluable companion.
