Book Description

August 4, 1993
The first English translation of a mature work by the greatest German novelist of the nineteenth century, a brilliant portrait of a female in a starkly male-dominated society. A story of mutual sexual attraction at a fashionable spa moves to a grim climax among the high-society fringe of Berlin. Given the author's sympathy with the position of a woman in a man's world, and the setting of the new German capital of Berlin, this is as relevant today as when it was first written. ""Conveys an astonishingly full picture of German society in rapid and often costly change."" - The Times. ""Written with wit and a controlled fury and Radcliffe's elegant translation does it superb justice. More, please."" - The Observer. ""This is a solid, long-overdue, and welcome contribution to the body of classical works of German literature in translation, and it compares favorably with Douglas Parmé's translation of Effi Briest, the best known novel by Fontane in the English-Speaking world."" - Translation Review.

This review is from: Cecile (Paperback)
This novel, though it may be important in understanding Fontane's development as a novelist, had very little appeal for me. Though it may be in part the fault of the translation, I found it so thoroughly of its time and place in Germany, so thoroughly enmeshed in the idea of what it was to be German at the time, that I could not connect with it at all. Almost claustrophobically insular. The notes and the afterword, intended to assist our understanding, are inadequate for one who is not well-versed in German history and literature. None of the characters seemed at all like real people, and the plot seemed almost Gothic.

Many of the elements of the plot and the themes emerge again in Fontane's "Effi Briest," a much more accessible and affecting work, which I heartily recommend.
