Biography

With her first three recordings, 2003’s The Love EP, 2005’s breezy twentythree and 2008’s Hello, Tristan Prettyman parlayed her smoky alto voice and laid-back surfer-girl-from-San-Diego charm into an eight-year career studded with highlights that included Hello’s No. 2 position on the iTunes Digital Albums chart and headlining tours across the U.S., Europe, and ... Editorial Reviews

Tristan Prettyman took an extended break prior to making her new
album Cedar + Gold. She traveled the globe, had surgery to remove
polyps on her vocal cords, got engaged to her long-term boyfriend, dealt
with the pain of his ending the engagement, and eventually questioned
whether she even wanted to be a musician at all.
With an artistry that lies in her finely etched lyrical details and intimate
vocal performances, Prettyman spares no one, including herself, on songs
like Say Anything, I Was Gonna Marry You, Come Clean, Glass Jar,
and Never Say Never. As intense as some of the songs may be, the mood is
tempered not only by playfully twisted tunes like first single My Oh My,
but also by the album s warm, earthy sound, which Prettyman created
with her producer Greg Wells (Adele, Katy Perry), who plays piano, bass,
drums, and some guitar on the album.

This is one of the most achingly beautiful albums I've heard in years. I rarely buy whole albums from any artist anymore, but this was an exception. The songs tell the story of a failed relationship, but Prettyman spins all that pain into some hauntingly beautiful songs. "Say Anything" and "I Was Gonna Marry You" brought tears to my eyes, but TP doesn't wallow. "My Oh My" and "Quit You" are upbeat, and "Never Say Never" reminds us "you can't start a fire in the pouring rain." Tristan is the real deal: a strong, honest, and an example of how to spin gold out of pain. Love the woman as much as her music! This album makes me want to curl up with a blanket in front of the fire and listen to the songs over and over.

At my age (55), I am very surprised to become a fan of a new talent. I really enjoy Tristan Prettyman's songs on this album. It's wonderful to have something new to listen to. It's been years since I've been this excited about a new musical talent.

This record deserves a Grammy. Every song is really really good. The more I listen the more I cant stop singing the songs in my head. The record grows on you and each song gets better and better each time you listen. You will not be disappointed. The record clearly shows Tristans talents and style are well diversified. She's rocking the house to laid back to electronica all in one record. Very well done. Go girl....Cedar + Gold

The California surfer girl hailing from San Diego is back with her fourth album of raw, emotionally wrenching songs. Armed with a dusky alto voice capable of ranging as far as the emptiness of lonely can go, with Cedar + Gold she delivers an album of alt-rock/folk/country that her fans have been waiting a long 4 years to hear.

With her first three recordings, 2003's Love Ep , 2005's Twentythree (Dig) which delivered the hit, "Love, Love, Love" and 2008's Hello , Prettyman parlayed her talent and laid-back surfer-girl-from-San Diego charm into an eight-year career studded with highlights that included Hello's No. 2 position on the iTunes Digital Albums chart and headlining tours across the U.S., Europe, and Japan. Instead of racing back to the studio, Prettyman took an extended break during which she traveled the globe, had vocal cord surgery, ended an engagement, and questioned whether she even wanted to be a musician at all.

Thankfully, the answer to that soul searching question was yes. These tunes examine those highs and lows, the loss and redemption. "I started writing from a place that was so deep and honest, where I didn't hold anything back," she says. "It felt so good. I was like, 'This is what music is about - being able to release what is trapped inside of you.' Whenever anything caused me pain, I'd tell myself, 'Save it for the record.'"

Prettyman enlisted producer Greg Wells (Adele, Katy Perry) who plays piano, bass, drums, and some guitar on the album. "Greg forced me to step into really being a musician and owning what I do," she says. "Once I did that, I got super creative and the songs started coming from a different place. It was a very intuitive process.

Been anticipating her new album for years! So worth the wait. Every song on this album is great, in it's own way. Favorite is Glass Jar, so simple, bittersweet. I have listened to this album straight through, on repeat. Great for a cold day in Seattle, mug of coffee in hand, book or crossword on lap. Highly recommend this beautiful, honest piece of work.

A masterpiece of poignant reflection on lost love. Far and away her best work though not such a departure that loyal fans might find themselves put-off. I'm years away from my last heartbreak and still find myself welling up. Not a weak song in the bunch though if I had to pick favorites I'd go with Bad Drug, Glass Jar, and Deepest Ocean Blue. Congratulations to Ms Prettyman on having overcome her medical issues etc and turning out this gorgeous collection.

One of the best -- if not THE best -- album to come out this year. The lyrics are written straight from the heart. Every song is catchy and perfect. Pure genius.

This is my first purchase of a Tristan Prettyman cd and it won't be the last. The lyrics and music resound with the pain of lost love. I love Tristan's voice. Just beautiful!
