5.0 out of 5 stars Appropriate as a gift, or for yourself, June 24, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Celebrate Life: New Attitudes For Living With Chronic Illness (Paperback)
I purchased this book after being diagnosed with Lupus and it helped me focus on various issues for living with a chronic disease. The author, Kathleen Lewis, has a very similar diagnosis to mine, and she explains how she coped and the lifestyle changes she made. As a nurse and counselor, she offers a wealth of complete information from how to approach the medical establishment, to how to reward yourself, to fostering acceptance of the disease, both within and with friends. She has thoroughly researched a number of issues and then compiled it into this book. It is an upbeat and concise chronicle of an otherwise demoralizing experience. Since few of my friends can relate to my health issues, I found her to be a companion with good advice.

This book provided a lot of emotional comfort to me while I was struggling with osteoarthritis. Living with severe pain and disability, I was terribly frightened and sometimes angry at my own body. Kathleen Lewis's book was a friend during my healing process; she suggests many practical suggestions for dealing with physical issues, as well as the emotional components of an illness. I am very grateful that it was recommended by the Arthritis Foundation, which is where I discovered it first. I have recommended it often to others who have chronic illness, whether it's a form of arthritis or another chronic condition.
