4.0 out of 5 stars Celebrate Mistakes: Not A Mistake!, September 8, 2004
By
This review is from: Celebrate Mistakes (Audio CD)
From Chico, California, Number One Gun are:

Jeff Schneeweis - Vocals / Guitar
Ben Tietz - Guitar / BGV's
Trevor Sellers - Bass
Jordan Mallory - Drums / BGV's

Celebrate Mistakes, Number One Gun's debut album is exactly just what the title would suggest. Jeff Schneeweis (lead vocals / guitar) was quoted on the band's official website as saying "Really it's all about humbling yourself, realizing our humanity. When you make mistakes, you just have to face it, learn from it and get on with life. God has given us the resources to deal with any situation we are put in. He gives us hope, and a way out. That's really what the album is all about." And though you may not hear God's name in the music, NOG's lyrics remain saturated by their love for and dependence on Him.

The first track on the album is "The Starting Line" which talks about trying to do things on your own and failing miserably each time you try to. "It always added up to be your fall to your mistakes/You want it to be His voice that calls your name". The song ends with Schneeweis repetitiously chanting "I just wanted to get this started". And seeing as how most of the songs on the album are about mistakes, this is perfect. And like I said before, the majority of the tracks on this album follow the leader and share struggles, pain, insecurity, and even agony, but rejoice in recovery.

Lyrically, I think that their best song on the album has to be "These Things." Though, that will always come down to personal preference. Many people I have encountered have felt that from track #7 on, the album is filler. But I would have to disagree with them. If you can rock out to ballads as well as up-beat songs, then you will love this album. I look at NOG as a very melodic mixture of bands such as Too Bad Eugene, Anberlin, Mae, and older Further Seems Forever. So, if you enjoy these bands, go ahead and buy this album; you won't regret it.

At first listen you may think that they are to be tossed aside with many of the other new bands these days, but somehow there's definitely something different about this band. If you are a fan of Christian rock music, you may have heard of the band Bleach, which is known not only for their amazing music but also their amazing, energetic live shows. Very few bands that I have seen have ever rivaled the energy level of Bleach. This especially impresses me because when I saw them live they had not yet released this album, so not too many of those in attendance would have really known of the band or their music, but nonetheless, the band delivered a powerful set.

With this album set as their starting point, I expect great things to come from Number One Gun. With realistic lyrics, positive outlooks, and a tenacity that I admire, I guarantee you that these guys are going places.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing, July 15, 2004

I came across this band on the radio, and instantly fell in love with their first single, "On & On." I purchased the CD and I was taken away! Number One Gun blends guitars and drums in a truly creative way, and they connect it together with lyrics that inspire. Check out their songs "Starting Line," "The Last Time," and "Hear This." "These Things" is a beautiful ballad and compliments the rest of their more rock songs nicely. Their live shows are also very passionate, driving, and moves me like only a few bands can. As their title "Celebrate Mistakes" suggests, this album taught me that life is about the imperfections... it's what we do with those "mistakes" that matters the most.
