Alexandre Dumas, author of The Three Musketeers and so many sequels, all but invented the action adventure novel, and certainly he has few peers in all the years since. His stories are thrilling works of derring-do, foul deeds, close escapes, and glorious victories. In this third volume of his Celebrated Crimes, Dumas tells the tale of Mary Queen of Scots, a woman who suffered a violent death, and around whose name an endless controversy has waged. Dumas goes carefully into the dubious episodes of her stormy career, but does not allow these to blind his sympathy for her fate. Mary, it should be remembered, was closely allied to France by education and marriage, and the French never forgave Elizabeth the part she played in the tragedy. This book was not written for children. Dumas has minced no words in describing the violent scenes of a violent time. In some instances facts appear distorted out of their true perspective, and in others the author makes unwarranted charges. The careful, mature reader -- for whom the books are intended -- will recognize and allow for this fact.

Good Book, needs editing.,

Interesting to see where and how Dumas got his start. Not late in his career Dumas, but you can flashes of him peek through as it goes along. Lots of criminal cases we have never heard of that were probably the "OJ" of the middle 1200 to 1800's. All this needs is an editor to clean up some minot typos and formatting errors, and it will take its place in any book collection. I would have paid for this book if it had just a little editing to it.

For the price, you hate to complain, but the constant typos are a little distracting. They're the kind of typos that slip by a spell-checker ("farmer" instead of "former," for example, and strangely, "delta Rovere" instead of "della Rovere"). Dumas goes into an incredible amount of detail, wandering off into every by-way, taking all the time in the world and juicing up the characterizations past the point of believability at times. Still, he seems to have done an incredible amount of research, and the crimes are interesting. Just remember the book is written in the style of another age, and don't expect Ann Rule. There's enough material here (28507 locations) to keep you grazing through the stories for years to come.
