5.0 out of 5 stars Donegal Fiddle Genius!, April 15, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Celebrated Recordings (Audio CD)
What fiddle playing! Donegal has produced lots of great fiddlers, but this recording shows why John Doherty is up there at the top. Crystal clear tones, skilful bowing, tastful left hand... I recommend it as an excellent example of the real music of Donegal.

The liner notes say that he picked up his father's fiddle bow on the night he was born. This is some of the fastest, purest of tone, flying Irish fiddle you are likely to hear. Staccato, cross-bowing, double-stops, and triplets swarm about beautiful traditional tunes. If you listen to Altan, Beginish, Bothy Band, Kevin Burke, Tommy Peoples, you'll want to hear John Doherty. His music, his speed, complexity, and clarity are breathtaking. This is unaccompanied fiddle (33 selections) by a master.
