Editorial Reviews

Celebrating Bird is a revealing look at an enigmatic yet endlessly appealing man, who soared to the heights of creative freedom but couldn't beat a lifelong addiction to heroin. It includes a TV appearance with Dizzy Gillespie and rare footage with jazz greats including Billy Eckstine, Count Basie, Art Tatum, Thelonious Monk, Louis Armstrong, Kenny Clarke and Lucky Thompson, Lester Young, among others. This exciting soundtrack contains many of Parker's finest recordings including: Ballade, Yardbird Suite, Relaxin' At Camarillo, Just Friends, Koko, Confirmation, Au Privave, Kim, and Bloomdido.

This is not a biopic, and, frankly, it is the weakest video in a box set I purchased titled Masters of American Music (which I highly recommend.)

As for learning about Bird, there are better sources, but this video has value because of the wealth of primary sources, including commentary by Chan Parker and Rebecca Parker Davis, both ex wives, as well as a large number of musicians who played with and knew Bird. Those, alone, make this an invaluable addition to the body of knowledge.

There were no factual errors that I could discern, but the video was all over the place in sequence and content. And, to be fair, the producers had significant obstacles, not the least of which is the dearth of live film of Parker himself. On the other hand, static shots as a backdrop to some of Parker's interviews would have been a great touch because Bird was highly intelligent and articulate. Two minutes of Bird in his own voice would have greatly added to the composite of one of our greatest musicians. Fortunately, such audio is relatively easy to find using a web search.

For a more complete picture of Bird the man and Bird the musician I highly recommend Bird. Although this is a dramatization with an actor portraying Parker, Clint Eastwood, the director, made sure it stayed true to events, and Forrest Whitaker comes across as believable. For anecdotes and how Parker fit into the context of jazz (and how he revolutionized it), it's hard to escape Jazz : A Film By Ken Burns.

There are only two video registrations of Charlie.
But this DVD compensates that amazing omission.
Bird was a genius and Celebrating Bird confirms that!

Its ok for a single DVD. However, if you are looking for an extended documentary on his life, buy the big 4 or 5 DVD volume by Ken Burns, there's nothing like it, and it spends quite a lot of time on Bird. Its a must-have for jazz fans.
