Living proof that jazz isn't dead. Take out the auto-biographical narrative at the beginning (couldn't this have been part of the liner notes?) and Garrison Keillor's smug a-- kissing at the end, and you have one of the hottest, most enjoyable jazz albums I've heard in a long, long time. There's nothing retro, neo or ironic about any of this, just hot, hot stuff from a group of players for whom jazz is a living art form. The guest stars are nice, but leave them out and this is still terrific.
