It’s been a long wait, but Shockley is back with Celebrating Hotchclaw...we're celebrating Shockley! -- Books To Watch Out For by Carol Seajay

From the Publisher

New novel released by legendary author Ann Allen Shockley A&M Books of Rehoboth Beach, DE announces the publication of Celebrating Hotchclaw by Ann Allen Shockley. Shockley is the author of the groundbreaking and now classic 1974 novel Loving Her.

In this new contemporary work, Shockley introduces us to Hotchclaw, an historically Black College. The school is a survivor among the many small southern colleges that came into being after slavery to promote higher education for Black students in an era of segregation. Although struggling with financial difficulties, Hotchclaw is ready to celebrate its one hundredth anniversary.

But under the surface of the jubilation there are internal conflicts - professional, psychological and sexual – among the president and faculty. And, a shocking discovery about one of Hotchclaw’s most admired faculty members sets off a maze of entanglements reaching to a predominantly white northern university.

Ann Allen Shockley, with her dramatic sense and characteristic humor has crafted a vibrant novel that draws the reader to the characters, their rising tensions and the very real world she has created.

Celebrating Hotchclaw retails for $17. For more information contact A&M Books, by mail at P.O. Box 283, Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971 or by e-mail at AandMPublishers@aol.com.

Loving Her was originally released by a mainstream publisher in 1974 and reprinted in 1997 by Northeastern University Press, Loving Her has been acclaimed as the first novel by an African American author to have an African American protagonist and to deal explicitly with an interracial lesbian relationship.

A&M Books is celebrating its tenth anniversary with the publication of Celebrating Hotchclaw. The new publication joins the A&M Books catalogue which includes the 14 novels of legendary feminist storyteller Sarah Aldridge. Aldridge is the pen name for Anyda Marchant who, along with her partner of 57 years Muriel Crawford operate A&M Books. The latest Sarah Aldridge novel, is O, Mistress Mine ($15), published in 2003. A&M also published the best-selling comic essay collection, As I Lay Frying – a Rehoboth Beach Memoir ($15) by columnist Fay Jacobs.

4.0 out of 5 stars Welcome Return, but disappointing read, Really three and a half stars, July 28, 2006
This review is from: Celebrating Hotchclaw (Paperback)
I'm not sure what I expected, but I didn't get it. Shockley has given us too many characters to be involved with and not enough information about the ones that I suspect are supposed to be the central characters. Her writing is much better than it was in Say Jesus and Come to Me, but her plotting is a little scattered. I think that Angela and Michael are the people we are supposed to care about, but "because I could" doesn't give us an explanation of Michael's life-changing action. I really didn't know enough about either of them to care and got too much extraneous information about the faculty and administrative personnel of Hotchclaw College, most of whom I could care less about because they are pretty bankrupt human beings. Perhaps next time Shockley should write a detailed story about a HBC populated by people we can more easily care about. Frankly, I hope the administration of HBC's isn't nearly as incompetent as that of Hotchclaw. Nonetheless, I'm glad she's back.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hotchclaw brings Shockley Back!, January 9, 2006

This review is from: Celebrating Hotchclaw (Paperback)
This is an amazing book by the woman who spoke to so many readers in the 1970's with her groundbreaking novel Loving Her.
Hotchclaw is vintage Shockley - politics, gender-bending, quirky characters and same-sex relationships - not to mention a little bit of history along the way. A terrific read.
