Editorial Reviews

Mads Tolling, internationally renowned violinist is a two time Grammy Award-Winner and a member of Turtle Island Quartet and Stanley Clarke Band. Celebrating Jean-Luc Ponty - Live At Yoshi's is Tolling's third CD release in his own name. Tolling pays homage to his mentor, the great French jazz violinist, Jean-Luc Ponty, who recommended him to Stanley Clarke a decade ago. Tolling does so with his quartet in an electric atmosphere at the famed Bay Area jazz club, Yoshi's. Ponty hits such as New Country and Enigmatic Ocean are given new life with tuneful arrangements and inspired playing by the Mads Tolling Quartet.

5.0 out of 5 stars poetic salute July 26, 2012
By Minerva
Format:Audio CD
I was in the audience at Yoshi's when they recorded this album. The show was a beautiful homage to first generation fusion violin master Jean-Luc Ponty who is one of Tolling's mentors. Mads Tolling quartet is a tight-knit ensemble. Tolling is an amazing violin player with formidable technique. He has an unmistakable, very unique sound and vocabulary to himself. Celebrating Jean-Luc Ponty -Live at Yoshi's totally captures the amazing night the audience experienced that night.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow May 15, 2012
Format:Audio CD
What a talented violin player! The guitarist rocks too. I have been a Jean-Luc Ponty fan for a long time so its very exciting to hear another musician pick up his music and cover and arrange it as well. So far the arraignments of Engimatic Ocean are the best however I wish he had played the entire Struggle of the Turtle to the sea suite. Maybe in the future he'll do a fully fleshed out studio album. Madding seems to have solid chops however I wish he'd amplify his violin with a thicker sound and apply more effects. I don't think he's playing a 5 string the way Ponty often does but I really love the arraingements and the energy of the band. Great work so far. Its on Spotify right now but I'll buy the actual CD eventually.

5.0 out of 5 stars Respectful homage to Ponty's music. March 16, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Tolling leads a fine band through a few of his favorite Ponty tunes as well as a few of his own. Do not expect a note-for-note cover. Except for the themes, Tolling adds light variations to the Ponty songs and this is how it should be.
