Book Description

February 6, 2007

Since its publication in 1978, Celebration of Discipline has helped millions of seekers discover a richer spiritual life infused with joy, peace, and a deeper understanding of God. Hailed by many as the best modern book written on Christian spirituality, Celebration of Discipline explores the classic "disciplines," or central spiritual practices, of the Christian faith.

Dividing the Spiritual Disciplines into three movements of the spirit, Foster shows how each movement contributes to a balanced spiritual life. The inward Disciplines of meditation, prayer, fasting, and study offer avenues for personal examination and change. The outward Disciplines of simplicity, solitude, submission, and service prepare us to help make the world a better place. The corporate Disciplines of confession, worship, guidance, and celebration bring us nearer to one another and to God.

Foster provides a wealth of examples demonstrating how the Spiritual Disciplines can become part of our daily activities—and how they can help us shed our superficial habits and "bring the abundance of God into our lives." Celebration, often the most neglected of the disciplines, is revealed as critically important, for it stands at the heart of the way to Christ. Celebration of Discipline will help motivate people everywhere to embark on a journey of prayer and spiritual growth.

From AudioFile

Listeners will be heartened by the gentle wisdom embodied in this classic spiritual guide. With an intellectual clarity rivaling that of C.S. Lewis, the author explains that the tasks of spiritual discipline can be inward (meditation, prayer, fasting, study), outward (simplicity, solitude, submission, service), or community-focused (confession, worship, guidance, celebration). This welcome advice points to what each of us can do to foster inner growth and moral decisiveness. Richard Rohans pleasant enunciation and ability to connect with the material are put to good use narrating this much needed lesson. His sensibilities and relaxed pace calm the mind into becoming open to the possibilities of incorporating structure into ones spiritual life. 5.0 out of 5 stars Great companion when doing a study!, November 15, 2008

Doing a group study of the book, I would read a chapter, but not all of it would sink in. After reading the chapter, I would listen to it on a walk or while driving a few times. It helped immensely!

The reader is easy to listen to, and the recording doesn't have any hissing, popping, or crackling in it.

For anyone wanting to understand better the spiritual disciplines, this is a great reference. The author covers both what they are and how to approach them in a very practical way.

I have used the book as a reference many times in conjunction with Dallas Willards book and one by Jan Winebrenner on the same topic.

The audio CD version makes for a great way to refresh on the topic during the commute to work.
