Stay away. Far, far away., December 4, 2005
This review is from: A Celebration of Marriage: Hopes and Realities (Hardcover)
This book was given to my wife and I years ago when we first got married, and sort of collected dust as we never really looked at it. Recently, while cleaning, she pulled it off the shelf and started to flip through it, and we couldn't believe how atrocious the advice given was. For example, if one spouse, for whatever reason, decides they do not want to have sex at a point in time - quite literally ONE time - and then the other spouse runs off and has an affair, both spouses are equally responsible for the ensuing trouble. The author akins this to the fact that one spouse (wife) should be cooking always, and is quite evil if they fail to cook one time - even if its something like "I'm just too tired tonight" Just as a final example, one should "always have fresh baked buns in the oven for the kids at school so they don't steal from the local bakery" What happened to teaching your kids that stealing is wrong, no matter what you have or don't have?
The author quotes numerous scripture to support various views, and its quite scary. As one who loves exegetical work (it comes with the M. Div) I can say with authority (as much given to me) that there is some serious "spoofing" of the texts she cites.
So, in short, if really want a book on the ins and outs of marriage, go somewhere else. And if you want a book that uses scripture in an intellectually honest manner, don't even open this one - I fear her warped nature might corrode a brain or two just trying to see "How on earth did you get that from that in context?"
