I am almost at a loss as to how to rate this book. A big part of me wants to say four stars, because the author made a lot of good points and much of the writing was beautiful, even poetic. But as a whole the story left me feeling a bit...empty. I didn't find myself caring for many of the main characters, except for the African priest named Pius. In a novel full of shallow and sometimes meaningless people, he was a breath of fresh air. I suppose 3.5 out of 5 stars is the most accurate rating I can give.
