4.0 out of 5 stars For Dog-Lovers & Book Collectors, October 10, 2004
This review is from: Celebration of Rare Breeds, Vol. 2 (Hardcover)
Please keep in mind that these books were printed in 1986 & 1991. While some of the breeds are common now, others are still very rare! A couple breeds which are now AKC recognized are only represented by line drawings, however all the b/w photos are clear and of good quality. Each breed synopsis is quite informative. My only disappointment is that I thought I ordered the volume with the Long Haired Whippet in it, but it was not. Vol 1 has a red cover; Vol 2 has a blue cover. To help others seeking a book including a specific rare breed, the following are breeds included in Vol 1 which are still "rare" today: Akbash Dog; American Hairless Terrier; Argentine Dogo; Beauceron; Boykin Spaniel; Castro Laboreiro; Catahoula Leopard Dog; Chinook; Czech Terrier; Dogue De Bordeaux; Dutch Shepherd; English Shepherd; Fila Brasileiro; German Pinscher; Glen of Imaal Terrier; Hovawart; Iceland Dog; Jagd Terrier; Karelian Bear Dog; Kyi-Leo; Lakenois; Lapphund; Leonberger; Maremma; Neapolitan Mastiff; Norwegian Behund; Sloughi; Slovak Tchouvatch; Swedish Vallhund; Tatra Sheepdog; Telomian; Tibetan Mastiff; and Tosa. The same "rare" list for Vol 2: Azawakh; Bolognese; Bourbonnais Pointer; Cane Corso; Caucasian Ovtcharka; Chart Polski; Coton De Tulear; Irish Red & White Setter; Japanese Spitz; Kai Ken; Longhaired Whippet; New Guinea Singing Dog; Pyrenean Shepherd; and Xoloitzcuintli.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as it sounds!, September 6, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Celebration of Rare Breeds, Vol. 2 (Hardcover)
I was disapointed before I even started to read this book. First of all, the pictures are black and white so you really can't even begin to understand the beauty of these wonderful anamals. Second, and most suprising of all, a good half of the dogs featured in this book are not even CLOSE to rare. As a matter of fact, most all of the breeds can be bought at a local pet shop. Lastly, the breed discriptions are marginal at best. The breed standards are way off and most of the text is babbling commentary rather than usefull information. You would get better information from a part-time pet shop clerk than this book. I may not be an author but I think a better title for this book would be, "Blah Blah Blah, Dogs, Blah Blah".
