Amazon.com Review

Soup is one of those versatile foods--you can dress it down for Saturday night in front of the TV or dress it up as an elegant precursor to an unforgettable meal. It can be savory or sweet, hot or cold, a hearty stew or a transparent consommé. What's more, you can make soup out of almost anything--everything from passion fruit to Jerusalem artichokes. In A Celebration of Soup, Lindsey Bareham applies an eclectic knowledge of her subject to this collection of recipes. Since the proof of a good soup is in its stock, Bareham begins there with a chapter devoted to demystifying the process. She then offers up a section on embellishments, and another describing the different types of soups accompanied by a wealth of recipes. You'll find old favorites such as cream of tomato and new surprises such as curried mango. With A Celebration of Soup on hand, you'll have a soup for every day and every occasion of the year. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

As a batchelor cook with only medium cooking skills, i wanted a good basic soup cookbook. This one fit the bill - there are PLENTY of recipes, including the simpler, hearty soups (no fruit in my soup, please!) that i lean towards. I've tried six so far, and all turned out just as I'd hoped or better. There is plenty of fancier fare here, as well. One feature I really like is the introductory chapter on making stock. There's also a handy chapter on "correcting soup problems." I get the impression the author really does love soups, and wasn't just cranking out another cookbook. Well done!

This is the kind of cookbook you'll find yourself devouring...soooo many enticing recipes to choose from! And, even better, it's the kind of cookbook you'll keep going back to time & again. I've tried a few soup recipes in it out of curiosity, just because they sounded so weird...and been amazed at how delicious they were. For example, try the recipe for cold lentil soup with buttermilk...
