The Collie at work renders a picture of elegance and athleticism that is difficult to duplicate. In my mind, I see my Collies working—it is an image reminiscent of the artistry and precision work of an Olympic diver or figure skater. The Collie is not a breed that does well alone shut in a kennel. It is important that we reach beyond the kennel doors and allow these beautiful creatures to enjoy the thrust of life’s activities that they so richly deserve. The Collie was bred to work. You have a part in making sure that the light is not extinguished.
I have enjoyed seeing my Collies progress beyond the avenues of the showring to therapy work, herding, tracking, and obedience. It appears that a more concerted effort is being made among Collie fanciers to encourage the Collie at work. Records indicate that the Collie has been quite successful in the areas of herding, tracking, and obedience, especially since 1985. Participation and success in these and other activities continues to grow at an ever-increasing rate.
Our reasons for choosing the breed are many. The Collie’s beauty, loyalty, intelligence, and gentle nature are but a few. We certainly do not all own breed champions, nor does everyone want to. But take time to enjoy your Collie, whether it be an evening walk together or watching him as he gently herds sheep into a pen. This distinguished breed will always render a beautiful picture for each and every one of us.
