Book Description

May 1, 2009
Celebritizing Yourself is about branding yourself as an expert. Yes, to become a celebrity is no easy feat, but in today's world, it is easier than ever before.

Thanks to the popularity of talk show formats on radio and major network TV, the highly specialized programming on Cable TV, the explosion of internet shows and online PR and marketing, the countless newsletters and industry conventions and about a bazillion speaking groups all seeking a strong, interesting topic for their next seminar, keynote, or sponsorship, there are more ways to become a celebrity than there are, well, celebrities!

Anyone in any business can become a celebrity following Marsha s proven 3-Step Method. Anyone from the homeless to the candy shop clerk to the housewife to the professor to the entrepreneur to the CEO can become a celebrity they already have!

To celebritize oneself is not merely to gain fame or fortune. It s to share one s life experiences with other who may be in search of, and in need of, your wisdom. That's the guiding philosophy for becoming a celebrity. The satisfaction is its own reward.

Friedman's Celebritize Yourself method astutely addresses all of these points and more. She leads the reader through an easy to apply, step by step method that can help anyone achieve celebrity status in their chosen field.

"Celebritize Yourself" by Marsha Friedman is a unique business marketing book that provides a simple strategy and plan on how entrepreneurs can become celebrities in their field to promote their business or cause. By becoming a known and recognized expert in your field, you become a celebrity in that industry.

What is refreshing about this book is that Friedman teaches readers that being a celebrity goes beyond the Hollywood stereotype. Being a celebrity is not simply being superficially famous. It is about responsibly using that celebrity role to further the business and causes you believe in. It is about attaining credibility. One of her recommendations to attain credibility quickly is to become an author of a book. It is hard to disagree with her reasoning.

What separates this book from every other book I have read is that Friedman encourages readers to introspect into the reasons why they would want to become a celebrity, their expectations, and how they intend to use this role. Through this process, there is a realistic setting of expectations and a grounding process.

Friedman excellently makes the case of why entrepreneurs should aspire to be celebrities so that a greater mission and purpose can be better served, not simply for the fame itself. In her philosophy, becoming a responsible celebrity in your field is a respectable endeavor to achieve.

Overall, I found "Celebritize Yourself" an easy and pleasant read. It felt personal to allow my mind and feelings wander and explore the different possibilities. The book has strengthened my resolve to use the celebrity role as an additional professional credential and business marketing tool.

If you are an entrepreneur or marketer, do yourself a favor and read this ground-breaking book.

One of the consequences of the growth of the World Wide Web is that anyone can be published. It costs very little to have a personal blog and there are many sites that actively solicit contributions in a specific area. However, if it is not done right; one can spend a great deal of time and finger movements on a keyboard in attempting to make a name for themselves.
Friedman is the founder of a PR firm that specializes in turning the unknown into a known in the proper and necessary circles. Her advice in this book is fundamental and relatively inexpensive; most can be done with a computer and internet connection. Much of that advice is targeted at people that would like to publish a book and have it be known to the widest possible audience. As a heavy contributor of online material, I was aware of most of the techniques advocated by Friedman and found her advice to be accurate. Furthermore, there is very little in the way of outlandish hype; she is all business with little fluff. The only point of contention in that area is the suggestion in the title that all people can become a celebrity. It is more accurate to say, "become a celebrity within the audience of effectiveness for you."
If you have an idea for a book, want to make your expertise available to others or just have a profound thought or two that you would like to share, Friedman will show you how to do it.

I realize that some people will react negatively to the thought of becoming a "celebrity", as that often has a connotation of hype and falseness. But in Marsha Friedman's book Celebritize Yourself: The Three Step Method to Increase Your Visibility and Explode Your Business, she makes the argument that becoming a celebrity is simply the process of becoming the "name" in your field, the person that everyone thinks of and refers to when they talk about your area of interest. Reaching this level of visibility and reputation opens doors and gives you opportunities that you wouldn't otherwise get. Her method made a lot of sense to me, and gave me a lot of things to think about going forward.

Becoming a celebrity is all about branding yourself as an expert. Friedman shows that many people are quite competent at what they do, and they may even be the go-to person when others have questions. But that often doesn't extend beyond the company they work for or the business they run. As a whole, no one else knows about them. Why settle for that, when you can spread your message and influence to a wider audience if you have a passion for something? Friedman guides you through the process of thinking through what really motivates you, what makes you get excited when you wake up each morning. She also helps you figure out *why* you want to go the next step and expand your audience and influence. Once you have those reasons in place, you can start to work on her three steps. Those steps are write, speak, and sell.

Key to her process is writing a book on your topic. Having a book with your name on it instantly sets you apart from the crowd. If you can't write well, then hire or work with someone who can put your knowledge and passion into words. Next, you need to speak publically. This can be in seminars, interviews, TV appearances, or any other media outlet that will get your name and face out there. I know this is a major fear of many people (public speaking), but it's a critical skill to possess. Take classes in public speaking, join Toastmasters, practice in front of small groups, whatever. The fear may not ever go away, but it can be channelled to motivate you to do better. Finally, you need to sell. This can be your product, your knowledge, your time... whatever it is that adds to your income. Becoming an expert is no good if it doesn't lead to monetary opportunities. But getting the reputation gives you a much better chance of closing the sale.

Becoming a celebrity in your field isn't easy. In fact, it's hard work. But I found that Celebritize Yourself made the case as to why the hard work is necessary and worth it. I could see myself in her pages, and it wasn't hard to see myself following her recommendations. In fact, given some of the opportunities I've been working on of late, I find myself already moving down her recommended path. There's a lot here for me to think about...
