Book Description

September 1, 1998
Using the successful programmed learning format that proved so effective in his coastal navigation coursebook, Gerry Smith teaches the reader the basic skills needed to take sun sights and shows him how to use tables to find a position. The reader is able to evaluate performance immediately and will benefit from the pattern adopted throughout: learn, test, assess, relearn, progress. This book will be greatly appreciated by all those who have been traumatized by the usual complex books on celestial navigation.

The title sounded very promising. Following this "programmed text" was very frustrating. Texts like this give programmed instruction a bad reputation. I would not recommend this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars easy to follow, December 28, 1999

This review is from: Celestial Navigation: A Programmed Learning Course (Hardcover)
Starting from the basics, this book allowed me to get a grasp of the fundamentals of celestial navigation. It concentrates mainly on obtaining a position from the sun, and very little space is devoted to moon and star sights. That being said, the examples are very clear, and the process made understandable. This book needs to be re-read, but it can be taken up again from a position of certain knowledge, and so strengthen the knowledge gained. All basic questions are answered, and practical advice is given. I liked the format, and found the line drawings clear. Examples were well worked, and at the end of it, you get the feeling you could actually take a sun sight and fix a position. Try it!
